Young Chinese turn to AI pets for emotional support amid rising social anxiety

As social anxiety increasingly affects the younger generation in China, a growing number of youths are seeking solace in smart AI pets. This trend is exemplified by BooBoo, a small, guinea pig-like robot that has quickly gained popularity, selling over 1,000 units since its launch in May. These AI companions are providing emotional support to those grappling with feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Zhang Yachun, a 19-year-old student from Beijing, has long struggled with anxiety and forming close friendships. Her life took a positive turn after she purchased a BooBoo, which she affectionately named “Aluo.” “I feel like I now have someone to share the happy times with,” Zhang expressed, noting that Aluo makes her feel “needed.” Her father, Peng, acknowledges the pressures faced by today’s youth, explaining that modern children often experience heightened stress that can hinder their ability to make friends.
The rise of AI pets is not confined to teenagers; the market for “social robots” is projected to grow significantly. According to the South China Morning Post, the global market for these companions is expected to increase seven-fold, reaching a value of $42.5 billion by 2033. Families are increasingly investing in these robots as sources of emotional support for both children and adults.
Guo Zichen, a 33-year-old father from Nanjing, recently purchased an AI dog named BabyAlpha for his child. He believes it can assist in learning and provide companionship during times when family interaction is limited. BabyAlpha is sold by tech company Weilan and ranges from 8,000 to 26,000 yuan (approximately $1,090 to $3,500). Notably, 70% of BabyAlpha’s customers are families with young children.
Despite their growing popularity, some parents remain skeptical about whether AI pets can truly replace real animals. Guo Zichen articulated this concern: “Dogs have souls, while [BabyAlpha] looks different in an indescribable way.” While AI pets offer emotional connections, many believe that the bond formed with real pets cannot be replicated.
As the trend of using AI companions continues to gain traction among young people in China, it highlights a broader societal shift towards technology as a means of addressing emotional needs. With increasing pressures on today’s youth and families, smart pets like BooBoo and BabyAlpha are becoming vital sources of comfort and companionship in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
