Harvard Agrees to $53 Million Settlement Over Sale of Donated Human Remains

August 20, 2026

07:14

Harvard University has agreed to pay $53 million to settle civil lawsuits brought by families whose relatives donated their bodies for medical research, only for parts of those remains to be stolen and sold.

The settlement follows a disturbing case involving Cedric Lodge, a former morgue manager at Harvard Medical School, who admitted to stealing and selling human remains from cadavers donated through the school’s Anatomical Gift Program.

The case exposed serious failures in the handling and oversight of donated remains and raised difficult questions about the responsibilities medical institutions have toward people who donate their bodies for science.

What happened at Harvard Medical School?

Lodge worked as the morgue manager at Harvard Medical School and used his position to gain access to donated human remains.

According to prosecutors, he stole body parts from cadavers between 2018 and at least March 2020. The remains were taken without authorisation from Harvard or the families of the donors.

The stolen remains reportedly included:

Lodge transported some of the remains to his home in Goffstown, New Hampshire, where they were packaged and shipped to buyers in other states.

The activity was part of a broader network involving multiple people who bought and sold human remains.

How did the scheme become public?

The scandal became public in 2023, when Lodge was arrested and federally charged in connection with the scheme.

Lodge later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight years in federal prison.

Other individuals involved in related cases also pleaded guilty and received prison sentences.

The investigation revealed that the stolen remains had been removed from cadavers whose families had entrusted Harvard with their loved ones’ bodies for medical education and scientific research.

That distinction is central to the lawsuits: families did not authorize the sale or private distribution of their relatives’ remains.

Why did families sue Harvard?

Families began filing lawsuits against Harvard in the summer of 2023, following Lodge’s indictment.

Their claims included allegations of negligence and breach of fiduciary duty, arguing that Harvard had failed in its responsibility to safeguard donated human remains.

For families, the issue went beyond the physical theft.

Body donation is based on an act of trust. People who donate their remains typically do so with the expectation that their bodies will be treated respectfully and used for legitimate medical education or research.

The alleged theft and commercial sale violated that understanding.

The lawsuits therefore placed scrutiny not only on Lodge’s conduct but also on Harvard’s systems for monitoring employees and protecting donated remains.

What does the $53 million Harvard settlement include?

Under the settlement, Harvard will pay a combined $53 million to resolve the civil claims.

But the agreement goes beyond financial compensation.

Harvard Medical School has agreed to communicate directly with claimant families through a live webinar.

During that presentation, the school will acknowledge that Lodge’s conduct was “morally reprehensible” and inconsistent with Harvard’s standards.

The school will also provide families with a summary of changes made to its Anatomical Gift Program following the scandal.

That portion of the settlement is significant because it addresses the institutional safeguards surrounding body donation rather than treating the case solely as an issue involving one employee.

Harvard will create a medical student scholarship

The settlement also includes a longer-term initiative.

Beginning with the 2027-28 academic year, Harvard Medical School will establish an annual financial-aid scholarship for medical students.

The school said the scholarship is intended to recognize and honor people who donate their bodies through its Anatomical Gift Program.

Harvard described the initiative as being “in appreciation and in honor of all of our anatomical donors.”

The scholarship will not undo what happened to the affected families, but Harvard says it is intended to reaffirm the educational purpose behind anatomical donation.

What did Harvard’s deans say?

Harvard Medical School deans George Daley and Edward Hundert described Lodge’s conduct as “morally reprehensible” in an email to the Harvard community.

The deans said the settlement would allow the parties to avoid the costs and uncertainty of prolonged litigation.

They also emphasized that the crimes do not represent Harvard Medical School’s treatment of anatomical donors or its stated commitment to respecting people who donate their bodies for medical education.

That distinction will likely remain an important part of Harvard’s efforts to rebuild confidence in its Anatomical Gift Program.

Why is the case important for body donation programs?

The Harvard case highlights an uncomfortable vulnerability in anatomical donation programs: they depend heavily on trust.

People who donate their bodies to medical schools generally do so to support:

Once a body is entrusted to an institution, donors and their families have limited ability to monitor what happens to the remains.

That makes institutional oversight particularly important.

A medical school must therefore maintain strict controls over access, documentation, storage and disposition of human remains. The Harvard scandal demonstrates how a single employee with access to a morgue can potentially undermine that entire system.

What changes has Harvard made?

As part of the settlement, Harvard Medical School will provide claimant families with a summary of changes to its Anatomical Gift Program.

Those reforms are particularly important because the alleged misconduct continued for an extended period rather than being an isolated incident involving a single unauthorized removal.

For publication, the specific reforms should be detailed from Harvard’s settlement documents or official statement rather than inferred from the settlement announcement.

The settlement does not erase the underlying harm

The $53 million agreement resolves the civil litigation, but the case involves something that cannot easily be measured financially.

Families had voluntarily entrusted their relatives’ remains to a medical institution on the understanding that they would be treated with dignity and used for legitimate educational or scientific purposes.

The alleged commercial sale of those remains fundamentally violated that expectation.

Harvard’s decision to include a direct statement to affected families and a scholarship for future medical students reflects an attempt to address both dimensions of the scandal: compensation for those directly affected and renewed recognition of the people whose donations support medical education.

What happens next?

The settlement allows Harvard and the affected families to avoid prolonged civil litigation.

Harvard Medical School is expected to carry out the commitments contained in the agreement, including the statement to claimant families and the establishment of the annual medical-student financial-aid scholarship beginning in the 2027-28 academic year.

Meanwhile, Lodge remains subject to his federal prison sentence following his guilty plea.

The case serves as a stark reminder that body donation programs depend not only on the generosity of donors but also on the institutions entrusted with their remains.

For medical schools, maintaining that trust requires more than honoring donors in principle. It requires systems capable of ensuring that donated remains are protected at every stage.
