How Germany’s Hyrox Became The Global Fitness Phenomenon

What began in Germany as an attempt to turn gym workouts into a competitive sport has become a global fitness phenomenon. Hyrox combines endurance running with functional strength exercises in a standardised race format. Unlike traditional road races, participants do not simply run from start to finish. They alternate between 1-kilometre runs and eight functional workout stations, creating a competition that tests both cardiovascular fitness and strength.
The concept was launched in 2017 by event organiser Christian Toetzke, communications specialist Michael Trautmann and former German Olympic field hockey player Moritz Fürste.
Nearly a decade later, hundreds of thousands of people are taking part in Hyrox events around the world.
