A futuristic flying saucer has moved from science-fiction screens to a showroom floor in China. A Shenzhen company is displaying a two-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft in Yiwu, Zhejiang, and says the unusual craft is available for 800,000 yuan, roughly $120,000 or about Rs 1 crore.

The disc-shaped aircraft has a transparent spherical cabin, can take off and land vertically, and is designed to operate over both land and water. Its appearance has already turned heads at the Yiwu Global Digital Trade Center, with videos of the aircraft spreading across social media.

The aircraft is being developed by Shenzhen Smart Drone UAV, also known as Zhihang. Chinese media reports say it is intended primarily for low-altitude tourism, sightseeing and aerial performances rather than conventional point-to-point transportation.

What is China’s flying saucer aircraft?

The aircraft is a manned eVTOL, short for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. Unlike conventional aeroplanes, it does not require a runway to become airborne.

Its most striking feature is its saucer-shaped body and 360-degree transparent spherical cockpit. The cabin is designed to give the occupants a panoramic view during flight.

The company says the aircraft can carry one or two people. Its structure uses materials including fiberglass, carbon fiber, aluminum alloy and aviation-grade laminate, according to Chinese media reports.

The aircraft’s futuristic appearance has led to it being widely described online as a “UFO.” It is, however, a real aircraft concept rather than an unidentified flying object.

How does the flying saucer take off?

The craft uses a six-rotor ducted configuration. Its propellers are enclosed within openings in the aircraft’s body rather than being mounted on exposed arms.

The design allows the aircraft to generate vertical lift, enabling it to rise and descend without a runway.

The manufacturer also says the aircraft supports automated flight functions. That could make it useful for controlled sightseeing and demonstration operations, although an aircraft having automated flight capability is not the same as being approved for unrestricted autonomous passenger service.

Its ability to operate from both land and water is another unusual feature. Chinese reports describe it as having amphibious takeoff and landing capability.

How high and how long can it fly?

The aircraft is designed for very low-altitude operations.

According to the company and Chinese media reports, the current version can reach about 30 meters, or roughly 100 feet, above the ground.

Its reported flight endurance is about 15 minutes.

Those divs make the aircraft much more suited to short sightseeing trips, demonstrations and controlled aerial attractions than long-distance travel.

Its reported maximum operating height also sets it apart from the passenger air taxis often envisioned for urban transportation, which are generally intended to travel higher and cover greater distances.

How much does China’s flying saucer cost?

The quoted selling price is 800,000 yuan.

That works out to roughly $120,000 based on current yuan-dollar exchange rates, putting the aircraft in the broad range of Rs 1 crore in Indian currency. The final rupee equivalent can change with exchange rates.

The price applies to the manned flying-saucer model being displayed in Yiwu.

The company is also reportedly offering a much cheaper remote-controlled toy version, reflecting how the futuristic design is being marketed beyond the full-size aircraft.

Does the aircraft have permission to fly?

This is one of the most important details surrounding the product.

A company representative in Yiwu said the aircraft has obtained a special flight permit issued by China’s Civil Aviation Administration.

That permit should not automatically be interpreted as full certification for unrestricted commercial passenger aviation.

A special flight authorization can allow specific aircraft to conduct approved operations while broader certification, operating rules, infrastructure and safety requirements continue to develop.

The distinction matters because China’s rapidly expanding low-altitude economy includes experimental and emerging aircraft operating under different regulatory categories.

Where will the flying saucer be used?

The aircraft is being positioned primarily for low-altitude applications.

Potential uses include sightseeing flights, scenic-area attractions, aviation demonstrations and flight performances.

The low altitude and short endurance make tourism an obvious target market. A passenger could potentially fly over a designated attraction, shoreline or scenic location without the infrastructure required by a conventional aircraft.

The transparent cabin is also central to the concept. Instead of simply getting from one place to another, passengers are effectively being offered an aerial viewing platform.

Why is the flying saucer being displayed in Yiwu?

Yiwu is internationally known as a major trading and wholesale center, and its Global Digital Trade Center has increasingly expanded into technology-oriented products.

The flying saucer is being displayed on the fourth floor of the center, where visitors and potential buyers can view the aircraft.

Chinese reports say the exhibition has attracted groups of both domestic and overseas visitors since the aircraft was placed on display.

That makes Yiwu an unusual showroom for an eVTOL, but it also fits the city’s broader role as a marketplace where unusual products can quickly move from demonstration to commercial discussion.

Has the company already received orders?

The company says there has already been substantial commercial interest.

According to Chinese media reports citing the manufacturer, a pre-sale agreement signed last year involved 68 two-seat manned flying-saucer aircraft and 86 static display models.

The reported value of that agreement was close to 120 million yuan, or approximately Rs 150 crore at today’s rough exchange rates.

However, the div refers to a reported pre-sale agreement. It should not be presented as proof that all of those aircraft have been delivered or that the company has already recognized the full amount as revenue.

That distinction is important when describing early-stage eVTOL businesses, where orders, pre-orders, prototypes and certified production aircraft can represent very different stages of commercialization.

What makes this aircraft different from a normal eVTOL?

Most eVTOL projects focus heavily on efficiency, range and integration into future air-taxi networks.

This aircraft takes a different route by making its unusual shape part of the product itself.

The saucer design, transparent cabin and amphibious capability are aimed at creating an experience as much as a transportation service.

Its low operating altitude and short flight time also indicate that the company is targeting a narrower set of applications rather than trying to replace helicopters or conventional aircraft.

That could make tourism and entertainment the most practical early markets for the concept.

Is this China’s first flying-saucer aircraft?

No. Versions of the company’s saucer-shaped eVTOL have been under development and testing for several years.

Industry databases have documented earlier prototypes featuring six electric motors and six propellers. Test flights and demonstrations of similar designs have also been reported since 2023.

The significance of the latest development is that the aircraft is now being presented as a commercially available product with a quoted price and reported customer orders.

In other words, the story is less about China suddenly inventing a UFO and more about an unusual eVTOL design moving further toward commercial deployment.

What are the aircraft’s limitations?

For all its futuristic looks, the aircraft remains a short-duration, low-altitude machine.

A maximum altitude of around 30 meters and an endurance of about 15 minutes sharply limit where and how it can be used.

Battery-powered eVTOL aircraft also have to balance payload, battery weight, lift requirements, and flight endurance. Adding passengers, safety systems and other equipment can leave relatively little energy available for extended flights.

The regulatory environment is another constraint. Operating a passenger-carrying aircraft commercially requires more than simply demonstrating that it can take off and land.

Why the flying saucer matters to China’s low-altitude economy

The aircraft fits into China’s broader push to develop a “low-altitude economy”, a sector covering drones, eVTOL aircraft, urban air mobility and other aviation technologies operating at lower altitudes.

Chinese cities and provincial governments have been encouraging development of this market through infrastructure projects, demonstration zones and policy support.

The flying saucer is a particularly eye-catching example of that trend because it turns a developing aviation technology into something that looks as though it escaped from a 1950s science-fiction poster.

Whether such designs become practical transportation tools or remain primarily attractions for tourism and entertainment will depend on certification, safety, battery technology, infrastructure, and customer demand.
