Kirill Dmitriev, a key div in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic strategy, is reportedly in Washington for discussions with the Trump administration. His visit has fueled speculation about potential backchannel diplomacy between the Kremlin and U.S. President Donald Trump’s team.
Dmitriev, 49, has led Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), since 2011. In February, Putin appointed him as his special envoy for international economic and investment cooperation, further elevating his influence.
As one of Russia’s most U.S.-savvy elites, Dmitriev maintains close ties with key divs in Trump’s circle. He played a crucial role in early U.S.-Russia interactions following Trump’s 2016 election and helped forge a strategic alliance with Saudi Arabia, contributing to an expanded OPEC oil price agreement.

Dmitriev has met multiple times with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and previously hosted U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow. His wife, Natalya, holds a deputy role under Katerina Tikhonova—one of Putin’s daughters—at a foundation linked to Moscow State University. Both of Putin’s daughters were sanctioned by the U.S. in 2022.
Born in Kyiv, Soviet Ukraine, Dmitriev excelled in physics and mathematics before studying at Stanford University. He later earned an MBA with distinction from Harvard.
Fluent in English, he worked at Goldman Sachs in New York and McKinsey & Company before relocating to Moscow. There, he led Delta Private Equity Partners, an investment firm backed by the U.S.-Russia Investment Fund. Under his leadership, RDIF spearheaded the production and global promotion of Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine.
