Thieves blow up museum door and steal ancient artifacts, including a 2,500-year-old gold helmet

Thieves executed a high-profile heist at the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, early Saturday morning, stealing four priceless ancient artifacts, including the 2,500-year-old Helmet of Cotofenesti. According to Dutch police, the break-in involved the use of explosives to force entry.
The police reported receiving a call about an explosion at 3:45 a.m. local time. CCTV footage reveals the suspects using explosives to blow open an exterior door, with sparks and smoke filling the area before they made their escape.
The stolen items include three gold bracelets, believed to date back to 50 BC, and the Helmet of Cotofenesti, a 5th-century BC masterpiece of Dacian origin. The helmet, which was on loan from the National History Museum of Romania, is considered a culturally significant artifact.

The helmet, discovered nearly a century ago in a Romanian village, features intricate designs depicting mythological scenes. Notably, it includes a pair of engraved eyes above the wearer’s own, a design believed to ward off enemies and protect against the “evil eye.”
The artifacts were part of the museum’s temporary exhibit, Dacia: Empire of Gold and Silver, which showcased treasures from ancient Dacian society. The exhibit had been running since July 2024 and was scheduled to conclude on Sunday.
Drents Museum described the helmet as a “masterpiece” in a press release following the robbery. The museum remained closed over the weekend, citing significant damage to the premises caused by the explosion. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Dutch authorities are collaborating with Interpol as the investigation intensifies. Police revealed that over 50 tip-offs have already been received.
A gray car, believed to be involved in the heist, was stolen from Alkmaar earlier in the week. It was later found on fire just four miles from the museum, suggesting the suspects abandoned it and switched to another getaway vehicle.
The vehicle had stolen license plates, and police are urging the public to provide any information that could help identify the culprits.

Harry Tupan, general director of the Drents Museum, described the robbery as a “dark day” for both his institution and the National History Museum of Romania.
“We are intensely shocked by the events last night at the museum,” Tupan said in a statement. “In its 170-year existence, there has never been such a major incident. It also gives us enormous sadness towards our colleagues in Romania.”
The theft has sparked concerns about the security of invaluable cultural artifacts, particularly those on loan from international institutions. The Helmet of Cotofenesti, alongside the Dacian royal bracelets, represents a profound historical and cultural legacy now at risk of being lost.
The museum and law enforcement agencies have called for vigilance in tracking the stolen items to prevent their sale on the black market.
