In an unusual case of workplace discipline that has captured national attention, a police dog in Northern China has had its year-end bonus revoked following allegations of on-duty napping and improper use of department facilities.

The officer in question—a Corgi named Fuzai stationed at the Weifang police dog training base in Shandong province—received the disciplinary action during what has become one of China’s most talked-about performance reviews.

Fuzai’s journey in law enforcement began shortly after birth when he joined the Weifang training facility. By January 2024, at just four months old, the ambitious pup had secured a position as a reserve explosives detection operative. The performance review that went viral

During the recorded review session shared by the Weifang Public Security Bureau, Fuzai’s supervisor initially presented him with an impressive array of rewards, including a red flower, canned treats, and toys, acknowledging his accomplishments.

“You performed great this year. You passed the Level 4 assessment for police dogs. Not only that, you also successfully completed various security tasks and significantly helped promote Weifang’s police dogs,” the officer stated in the evaluation.

However, the tone shifted as recent infractions came to light. “But because of your recent behavior, being fatigued in the workplace, and even urinating in your own dog basin, we had to criticize and confiscate your snacks as a penalty. You will keep only the red flower.”

Public rallies behind disciplined officer

The incident shared on the department’s social media account “Corgi Police Dog Fuzai and Its Comrades” – which boasts over 384,000 followers—sparked an immediate public reaction. Supporters launched an online campaign advocating for the reinstatement of Fuzai’s bonus, arguing that minor infractions shouldn’t overshadow an otherwise exemplary service record.

One social media user expressed solidarity: “Poor Fuzai worked hard all year, only to lose its year-end bonus. I can relate so much.” Another supporter argued in Fuzai’s defense: “It peed in its own bowl, not in the bowl of its boss. Let my bestie take the punishment for it and return its bonus immediately!”

In response to the public outcry, the department issued a follow-up video assuring concerned citizens that while the original snacks remained confiscated, Officer Fuzai received a generous Lunar New Year gift package as compensation.
