10-year-old calls police on dad’s illegal stash after getting scolded for not finishing homework

In a surprising turn of events, a ten-year-old boy in Yongning County, China, resorted to an unexpected tactic to get back at his father after being scolded for not completing his homework. According to local media reports, the boy called the police and accused his father of possessing illegal items, resulting in the father’s arrest.
The incident unfolded on January 9 when the boy was reprimanded by his father for failing to finish his homework on time. Upset by the scolding, he ran out of the house and borrowed a phone from a nearby shopkeeper. He then reported to the authorities that his father was hiding poppy pods at their residence.
Poppy pods are illegal in China due to their association with opiates like codeine and morphine. The South China Morning Post reported that poppies are closely monitored by the government, which imposes strict penalties on unauthorized cultivation. The presence of opiate traces in poppy seeds has led to their ban as a food ingredient in the country.
After receiving the boy’s report, officers from the Chengguan Police Station of Yongning County Public Security Bureau located him and followed him back to his home. Upon investigating, they discovered eight poppy shells hidden in a cabinet on the balcony. The father admitted ownership of the pods, claiming he kept them for medical purposes.
Following this revelation, he was taken into custody, and the case was subsequently referred to the anti-drug brigade for further investigation.
This unusual incident raises questions about parental discipline and communication within families. While the boy’s actions may seem extreme, they reflect a deeper issue regarding how children cope with conflict at home. As authorities continue their investigation, this case serves as a reminder of the serious implications that can arise from seemingly innocuous family disputes.
