A British healthcare worker has secured a substantial financial settlement after an employment tribunal ruled that comparing her to one of cinema’s most notorious villains, Darth Vader, constituted workplace “detriment.” The case highlights growing sensitivity around workplace interactions and personality assessments in professional settings.
Lorna Rooke, an employee of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), has been awarded £28,989.61 (approximately $36,500) by a Croydon employment tribunal after a colleague likened her personality to that of Darth Vader, the iconic antagonist from the Star Wars franchise. The tribunal determined that such comparisons were “insulting” and “upsetting,” warranting financial compensation.
The incident originated during a team-building exercise in August 2021, when Rooke’s colleagues participated in a Star Wars-themed Myers-Briggs personality assessment. While Rooke was absent attending to a personal call, her colleague Amanda Harber completed the questionnaire on her behalf, subsequently announcing to the team that Rooke’s personality aligned with the dark lord of the Sith.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a widely used but scientifically controversial personality assessment tool, categorizes individuals into 16 distinct personality types based on four key dimensions: introversion versus extroversion, intuition versus sensing, thinking versus feeling, and judging versus perceiving. The Star Wars-themed version of this test adapted these classifications to match characters from the popular science fiction saga.
According to tribunal documents, the Darth Vader personality type was characterized as “a very focused individual” with the capacity to unite teams. Despite this relatively positive framing, the public comparison left Rooke feeling alienated from her colleagues.
“The tribunal determined that the results represented the colleague’s personal view of Ms. Rooke rather than an objective assessment,” said employment law expert Helena Worthington. “This distinction proved crucial in establishing detriment.”

The revelation reportedly left Rooke feeling unpopular among her colleagues, ultimately contributing to her decision to resign from her position approximately one month after the incident. In her resignation letter, Rooke cited the “Darth Vader incident” as one of several factors influencing her departure from the organization.
During testimony, Rooke described feeling “humiliated” by the comparison, particularly given the character’s association with intimidation and fear. “It was as if my professional identity had been reduced to a villainous caricature,” Rooke told the tribunal.
While the tribunal accepted Rooke’s claim that the Star Wars comparison constituted a workplace “detriment,” it rejected her assertion that this incident directly caused her resignation. The financial award of nearly £29,000 stemmed from a protected disclosure claim rather than solely from the Darth Vader comparison.

Importantly, the tribunal dismissed Rooke’s additional claims of unfair dismissal, disability discrimination, and failure to make reasonable workplace adjustments, highlighting the complex nature of employment disputes.
“This case demonstrates how seemingly innocuous workplace interactions can have legal consequences when they affect an employee’s dignity or professional standing,” said Martin Chambers, an NHS employment specialist. “Organizations would be wise to reconsider how personality assessments are administered and discussed in professional settings.”
The case comes amid growing scrutiny of workplace culture across Britain’s National Health Service, which has faced challenges related to staff retention and employee satisfaction in recent years.
