Government clears deployment of 14 battalions across critical military commands

As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to escalate following a recent surge in cross-border hostilities, the Indian government has authorized the Chief of Army Staff to mobilize the Territorial Army (TA) in support of the nation’s defense infrastructure.

According to a Ministry of Defence notification issued on May 6, the central government has approved the deployment of 14 of the existing 32 Territorial Army battalions across key strategic zones throughout the country. The move is part of a broader strategy to bolster India’s military preparedness amid growing security concerns.

Forces deployed across major commands

The battalions will be stationed under the operational jurisdictions of the Indian Army’s Southern, Eastern, Western, Central, Northern, and South Western Commands. Additional deployment will also cover the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), highlighting the scale and scope of the government’s mobilization efforts.

When deployed for training or active duty, TA personnel receive the same pay, benefits, and privileges as their counterparts in the regular Indian Army. Promotions within the force follow a dual-track system: while ranks up to lieutenant colonel are based on length of service and qualification criteria, higher ranks such as colonel and brigadier are merit-based and selection-driven.

Force structure and current strength

According to official data, the Territorial Army currently comprises approximately 50,000 personnel spread across 65 units. These include both departmental units — such as those affiliated with Indian Railways, ONGC, and Indian Oil — and non-departmental units like ecological task forces, infantry battalions, and engineering units.
