A US health insurance company employee undergoing cancer treatment has filed a discrimination complaint after allegedly being terminated for failing to meet productivity standards while receiving chemotherapy—a situation he describes as his “most dehumanizing work experience.”
The claims analyst, who had worked at HealthPlus Insurance for over three years, is seeking relief through the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) following what he characterizes as unfair dismissal during his vulnerable medical situation.
According to details shared on Reddit, the employee was diagnosed with stage 2 lymphoma last fall and promptly approached management to discuss workplace accommodations during his treatment period.

Following his doctor’s recommendation to minimize infection risk, the employee requested remote work arrangements during his chemotherapy treatments and provided comprehensive medical documentation supporting this request.
While his direct manager initially appeared receptive, the situation reportedly changed once the company’s Human Resources department became involved. The employee alleges that HR denied his accommodation request with the explanation that “remote work is a privilege, not an accommodation”—despite the entire department having operated remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead of allowing remote work, the company allegedly offered unpaid leave specifically on chemotherapy treatment days but required physical presence in the office on all other workdays. When the employee suggested this policy might violate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), he claims the HR director responded: “We employ 49 people, we’re exempt from ADA requirements.”

Despite experiencing severe treatment side effects, including extreme fatigue, nausea, and a compromised immune system, the employee attempted to comply with the company’s requirements by continuing to work in-office on non-treatment days.
However, his performance inevitably suffered. Following his second round of chemotherapy, management placed him on a “performance improvement plan” before terminating his employment for “failing to meet productivity standards.”
The company reportedly contested his subsequent unemployment claim by asserting he was terminated “for cause.”

“This company’s entire business is HEALTH INSURANCE, but they couldn’t show basic humanity to someone going through cancer treatment,” the employee wrote in his Reddit post.
The Reddit community responded with overwhelming support for the employee and criticism of the company’s actions.
“Absolutely disgusting behavior from a health insurance company of all places… denying you remote work when everyone else had it during COVID, then putting you on a PIP during chemo treatments is inhumane,” wrote one commenter.
