Greek woman files for divorce after ChatGPT ‘predicted’ her husband was cheating on her by ‘reading’ coffee ground

In a bizarre fusion of ancient superstition and cutting-edge technology, a Greek woman has filed for divorce after ChatGPT “read” her coffee cup and declared her husband was cheating. The story, which has gone viral across Europe and the US, is a testament to both the enduring power of fortune-telling traditions and the unpredictable influence of artificial intelligence in modern life.
The couple, married for over 12 years with two children, were no strangers to quirky trends. In Greece, coffee cup reading, or tasseography, is a beloved tradition-akin to tea leaf reading in other cultures-where the shapes left by coffee grounds are believed to reveal secrets about the drinker’s future or inner life.
But this time, instead of consulting a seasoned fortune-teller, the wife snapped photos of the leftover coffee grounds and uploaded them to ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, asking for a “reading.” The AI’s response was nothing short of dramatic: it allegedly revealed that the husband was fantasizing about a mysterious woman whose name began with “E,” and that he was destined to begin an affair with her. For her own cup, the AI warned that her husband was already cheating with a woman who wanted to break up their family.

What began as a playful experiment quickly spiraled out of control. The wife, who had previously dabbled in astrology and other mystical fads, took the AI’s reading seriously. She asked her husband to leave, told their children about the impending divorce, and within days served him with formal papers.
The husband, blindsided by the accusation, initially laughed it off as nonsense. “She’s often into trendy things,” he told Greek TV’s To Proino. “But this time, she took it seriously. I got a call from her lawyer three days later”.
His lawyer is now fighting the case, arguing that an AI-generated coffee reading has no legal standing as proof of infidelity. “He is innocent until proven otherwise,” the attorney told Greek City Times, highlighting the legal absurdity of using AI fortune-telling as evidence in divorce proceedings.

This incident is part of a growing global trend: people using AI for everything from relationship advice to supernatural guidance. Tasseography, once the domain of local mystics, is now being “democratized” by apps and chatbots. On TikTok and Instagram, hashtags like #AIFortuneTeller and #DigitalDivination have racked up millions of views, with users sharing their own AI-powered readings and sometimes making major life decisions based on the results.
According to a 2024 Pew Research survey, 18% of Americans under 35 have used AI for personal advice, and 7% admit to making significant decisions based on chatbot responses. In Greece, where coffee cup reading is a cherished tradition, the fusion of AI and mysticism is especially potent.
This isn’t the first time AI has sparked offbeat or outright hilarious headlines:

While the Greek woman’s divorce case may seem laughable, it raises real questions about the growing influence of AI on personal lives and even legal proceedings. Legal experts in Greece and abroad emphasize that AI-generated content-especially interpretations of coffee grounds or other “mystical” data-has no evidentiary value in court. Yet, as AI becomes more integrated into daily life, the line between entertainment, advice, and actionable information is blurring.
Dr. Maria Papadopoulos, a sociologist at the University of Athens, told Greek City Times, “We’re seeing a new wave of digital superstition. People are using AI the way their grandparents used fortune-tellers- sometimes for fun, sometimes with serious consequences.”
For US audiences, this story is both a cautionary tale and a sign of the times. AI is powerful, but it’s not a substitute for human judgment-especially when it comes to matters of the heart. As AI tools become more accessible and persuasive, experts urge users to treat their advice with skepticism, particularly when it comes to life-changing decisions.

As for the Greek couple, their fate now lies in the hands of the courts-and perhaps, a little less in the coffee grounds.
Key takeaways:
In the age of AI, maybe it’s best to take your coffee-and your fortune-telling-with a grain of salt.
