COVID-19 cases rise sharply in Southeast Asia: All about JN.1 variant and affected countries

A new wave of COVID-19 is sweeping through Southeast Asia, with Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand reporting substantial increases in cases. Health officials in these densely populated regions have heightened their vigilance, and several countries are now urging residents to receive booster vaccinations as infection numbers climb.
According to Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection, viral activity in the city has reached “quite high” levels. The percentage of respiratory samples testing positive for COVID-19 recently hit a one-year high in the region.
For the week ending May 3, Hong Kong documented 31 severe cases—the highest number in 12 months, Bloomberg reports. While current infection rates haven’t matched the peaks observed during the previous two years, increasing viral loads detected in sewage water, alongside rising Covid-related medical consultations and hospitalizations, indicate active transmission throughout the city of 7 million residents.

Singapore’s health ministry reported that COVID-19 cases increased by 28 percent to 14,200 in the week ending May 3, with daily hospitalizations rising approximately 30 percent. This marks the first time in nearly a year that Singapore has released official divs in this format, as the government now only provides case updates when significant increases occur.
“While the increase in cases could be due to factors including waning population immunity, there is no indication that the circulating variants are more transmissible – or cause more severe cases – than during the pandemic,” Singapore’s health ministry said.
Thailand experienced a similar trend, with COVID-19 cases doubling to 33,030 in the week ending May 17, compared to 16,000 cases the previous week, according to the Department of Disease Control. Bangkok reported the highest number (6,290), followed by Chon Buri (2,573), Rayong (1,680), and Nonthaburi (1,482).

The majority of infections occurred among people aged 30 to 39, prompting Thai public health authorities to encourage booster vaccinations, particularly for high-risk populations. The case surge followed April’s Songkran festival, which involved large-scale gatherings believed to have accelerated transmission.
China is also experiencing rising case numbers. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that between March 31 and May 4, the COVID-19 positivity rate among outpatient and emergency influenza-like cases nationwide jumped from 7.5 percent to 16.2 percent. Hospitalized case positivity rates also increased from 3.3 percent to 6.3 percent, according to Chinadaily.com.
This sudden increase is a warning sign that China may be entering a wave similar to the previous summer.

Meanwhile, India has recorded a modest increase in COVID-19 cases over the past week, with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reporting 257 active cases nationwide. However, there are currently no indications of a significant outbreak, though authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
The JN.1 variant and its related descendants—subvariants of the Omicron lineage—are reportedly driving the surge of COVID-19 cases across Asia. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a “variant of interest,” though it has not yet been designated a “variant of concern.”
This classification indicates that health authorities are monitoring the situation carefully, but there is currently no definitive evidence suggesting that JN.1 causes more severe illness than other Omicron subvariants.
