New bacteria found on Tiangong Space Station can possibly help grow plants on Mars

A previously unknown species of bacterium has been discovered aboard China’s Tiangong Space Station, and scientists believe it could play a vital role in supporting human life on Mars. The finding, published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, suggests that this hardy microorganism may offer a powerful biological tool for future space colonization.
The bacterium, named Niallia tiangongensis, was identified in June 2023 in surface samples collected aboard the Tiangong. These samples were returned to Earth by the Shenzhou 15 mission. Closely related to the Earth-dwelling species Niallia circulans, this new microbe is distinguished by a series of unique genetic traits that suggest it evolved in response to the extreme conditions of low Earth orbit.
This marks the first time a novel microbial species has been isolated from China’s orbiting laboratory. The bacterium is aerobic, spore-forming, and rod-shaped—traits common to many Earth microbes, but its environment of origin makes it particularly noteworthy.

“This microbe’s ability to survive and possibly thrive in a high-radiation, microgravity environment gives us valuable insights into how life adapts in space,” researchers noted in the published study.
While Niallia tiangongensis shares similarities with its terrestrial cousin, its genetic code reveals several important deviations. Two key proteins in the bacterium appear to have undergone structural and functional modifications. According to the paper, these changes may enhance the organism’s ability to form biofilms—protective layers of cells—and repair radiation-induced damage.
Even more intriguing is the bacterium’s unusual capacity to break down gelatin, a feature that scientists say could allow it to sustain biological processes in environments otherwise considered inhospitable to life.

“The genetic variations in Niallia tiangongensis are more than just mutations—they’re potential blueprints for synthetic biology on other planets,” said a senior microbiologist not involved in the study.
Although no direct health risks have yet been identified, researchers stress the importance of monitoring how space-borne microbes adapt and interact with human habitats.
“We still don’t fully understand how these microbes behave over time,” the paper notes. “But with increasing interest in Moon and Mars missions, it is essential to map these microbial developments to prevent contamination risks.”

This isn’t the first time microorganisms have been found in space. Previous studies on the International Space Station (ISS) uncovered strains of bacteria that not only endured cosmic radiation but also showed self-healing properties. Such discoveries are reshaping scientists’ understanding of how life might sustain itself beyond Earth—and how humans might one day grow food in extraterrestrial colonies.
Just weeks ago, a collaboration between Indian scientists, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and researchers in Saudi Arabia revealed the presence of 26 novel microbial species in Earth-based cleanrooms used for space missions. Many of these organisms, classified as extremophiles, can survive radiation and vacuum conditions—traits that make them ideal candidates for space agriculture and life support systems.
As humans prepare to venture deeper into space, from lunar habitats to Martian colonies, these microbial allies may become vital components in closed-loop ecosystems.
With Niallia tiangongensis, researchers now have one more contender in the growing list of Earth organisms proving they might have what it takes to colonize the final frontier.
