Kim Jong Un calls warship launch failure ‘unpardonable’; death sentence possible?

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has declared the failed launch of the country’s most advanced warship an “unpardonable criminal act,” sparking fears of severe punishment for those responsible. The 5,000-ton-class destroyer – Pyongyang’s largest and most sophisticated naval vessel to date – sustained damage during Wednesday’s launch ceremony in Chongjin.
While state media downplayed the physical damage, calling it “not serious” and repairable within 10 days, Kim’s furious reaction suggests significant consequences await those deemed accountable. The incident represents a major embarrassment for the regime, coming just weeks after celebrating the successful launch of its first destroyer as a naval modernization breakthrough.
North Korea’s Central Military Commission has already summoned Hong Kil Ho, manager of the Chongjin shipyard, as part of its probe into what it called “irresponsible errors.” According to state media, the accident occurred when a transport cradle detached prematurely during the launch ceremony.

“No matter how good the state of the warship is, the fact that the accident is an unpardonable criminal act remains unchanged, and those responsible for it can never evade their responsibility for the crime,” the commission stated through official channels.
Analysts note that Kim’s extreme reaction – and the military commission’s harsh language – often precedes severe punishments in North Korea, including potential executions. The personnel involved face judgment at a plenary meeting scheduled for next month.
While KCNA claimed the vessel only needed to be righted and have “scratches” repaired, defense experts believe:
The botched launch comes at a sensitive time for North Korea’s military leadership, which has recently emphasized naval expansion as crucial to countering U.S. and South Korean forces.
