Sergey Brin’s $700 million gift supports neuroscience and climate research

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has transferred nearly $700 million worth of Alphabet Inc. shares to three nonprofit organizations, according to a spokesperson from his family office. The 51-year-old tech billionaire, currently ranked as the world’s 10th richest person with a net worth of $143 billion (per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index), made the undisclosed donations earlier this week.

The largest beneficiary was Catalyst4, a nonprofit Sergey Brin established in 2021 to fund research on central nervous system disorders and climate change solutions. The organization received 3.2 million shares, evenly split between Alphabet’s Class A and Class C stock. At the time of the transfer, these shares were valued at over $500 million.

Additional donations target Parkinson’s research and family foundation

Brin’s philanthropic efforts extended beyond Catalyst4. More than 580,000 Alphabet shares were allocated to the Brin Wojcicki Foundation, his family’s charitable organization. Another 282,000 shares were gifted to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a leading nonprofit dedicated to advancing Parkinson’s disease research.

The donations were initially disclosed in a regulatory filing on Wednesday, though the recipients were not named at the time. A representative from Bayshore Global, Brin’s family office, later confirmed the details.

A history of high-impact philanthropy

Sergey Brin, who co-founded Google in 1998 with Larry Page, has long been involved in philanthropy, particularly scientific research and health initiatives. His personal connection to Parkinson’s—his mother was diagnosed with the disease—has driven his support for neurological research.

This latest contribution reinforces Brin’s commitment to tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from neurodegenerative diseases to climate change. As one of Silicon Valley’s most influential divs, his strategic donations continue to shape the future of scientific and environmental innovation.
