With increased risks of loneliness, chronic illness, and lifestyle shifts after retirement, senior citizens benefit from environments that foster connection, wellness, and purpose.
A recent study by Caring.com, based on WalletHub’s state happiness index, reveals the top states where seniors are happiest in the U.S. Researchers analyzed factors such as cost of living, life expectancy, senior health, the percentage of older adults living alone, and the number of senior centers per state.
Utah ranked first with a senior happiness score of 7.69 out of 10. Researchers credited the state’s “supportive environment” for older adults, noting strong senior health and a low percentage (21.48%) of seniors living alone — the third-lowest rate in the U.S. The study also pointed to Utah’s high volunteerism rate among seniors, with more than two-fifths of older residents volunteering regularly. This helps seniors stay “connected and involved,” contributing positively to their overall well-being.

Idaho came in second with a happiness score of 7.38. Just under 25% of seniors in the state live alone — the second-lowest rate nationwide — and Idaho ranks in the top five for senior centers per capita. With abundant outdoor recreation and natural scenery, the state encourages physical and mental wellness among its older population.
Connecticut and Delaware tied for third with scores of 7.01. Connecticut boasts the third-highest life expectancy in the U.S. and ranks in the top 10 for senior health. With only 7.2% of its residents lacking health insurance, access to medical care for seniors is more secure. The state also offers cultural and recreational discounts at museums, parks, and libraries, enriching retirees’ quality of life.
Delaware, considered one of the most supportive states for later life, ranked in the top five for the lowest share of people living alone. Researchers also praised its affordability and high marks in senior health and happiness.

Hawaii stands out with the lowest percentage of senior citizens living alone, the highest life expectancy, and the top senior happiness rating overall, despite ranking sixth in the list. Nebraska, New Hampshire, and Minnesota also earned high scores for health and well-being, while New Jersey and Vermont rounded out the top 10.
Though not in the top 10, some states excelled in specific areas. North Dakota, for example, had the most senior centers per 100,000 people, and West Virginia was noted for its especially low cost of living—a critical factor for retirees.
As senior citizens look to enjoy their later years, these states offer the best combination of health, happiness, affordability, and community support.
