Trump pushes bizarre claim about Biden’s identity amid health concerns

WASHINGTON — In another striking instance of misinformation from the Oval Office, U.S. President Donald Trump has revived an outlandish conspiracy theory, claiming that his predecessor, Joe Biden, was “executed in 2020” and replaced by a robotic clone. The claim, posted to his platform Truth Social, marks the latest in a pattern of unsubstantiated and often bizarre statements circulated by Trump to his online user base.

Trump amplified the theory by reposting a fringe message that read, “There is no #JoeBiden—executed in 2020. #Biden clones, doubles & robotic engineered soulless mindless entities are what you see. >#Democrats don’t know the difference.”

The repost came just days after Biden publicly disclosed he had been diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer. The White House has not responded to the president’s post or offered any clarification on Trump’s remarks.

History of personal attacks and falsehoods

Trump has frequently questioned Biden’s mental and physical fitness, particularly toward the end of Biden’s tenure. He has linked the former president’s health to various national problems, and has repeatedly suggested that Biden was not fully in control of his administration’s decisions.

In previous social media posts and public statements, Trump floated claims that Biden’s aides were using an autopen to sign legislation and issue pardons on his behalf—again implying the president was unfit to govern or absent altogether.

Broader pattern of promoting conspiracies

The “Biden clone” claim fits into a broader trend of Trump disseminating baseless theories, often centered around secret plots, deep state actors, or elite cabals. Last month, while hosting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House, Trump falsely claimed that white South African farmers were victims of genocide—a claim unsubstantiated by crime statistics in the country, which show no elevated risk for white populations.

Trump’s use of conspiracy theories has long drawn scrutiny. According to The New York Times, during his first term in office, he made more than 30,000 false or misleading claims, averaging around 21 per day. Many of those statements revolved around conspiracies aimed at discrediting rivals or undermining trust in American institutions.

Election cycle misinformation surge

An NYT analysis of Trump’s social media activity in the six months leading up to the 2024 presidential election found that at least 330 of his posts alleged false, shadowy plots either against him or against the American public. These included claims that the FBI had attempted to assassinate him and that government officials had orchestrated the January 6 Capitol riot—claims that have been widely debunked by law enforcement and independent investigations.

As Trump intensifies his online messaging ahead of the 2026 midterm elections and eyes a potential second term, the return to fringe conspiracy theories—this time about Biden’s identity—appears to reflect a familiar playbook: discredit opponents through misinformation, and reinforce loyalty by framing political conflict as existential warfare.

So far, the Biden camp and the White House have chosen not to directly engage with the latest claims. But with Trump’s rhetoric escalating and conspiracy theories reentering mainstream political discourse, concerns about the role of misinformation in American democracy continue to mount.
