Bizarre red sun stuns Florida residents; experts say Canadian wildfire smoke is to blame

A rare and unusual red sun seen in Florida and parts of Ohio last week left people confused and amazed. The sun appeared dark red and orange on May 31, prompting a wave of speculation and viral posts online.

Social media was filled with pictures of the strangely colored sun, with some users claiming it looked like a cutout or a scene from a science fiction movie. Several joked that the matrix was “broken” or that the simulation had glitched.

Viral images trigger wild theories and jokes

Images showed a range of appearances, from a deep red sun to a misty, ghost-like glow. A few even seemed to show two suns in the sky. The surreal sight left some wondering if they had seen Mars instead of the moon.

“Was this Mars I saw on Wednesday, and not the moon? It looked really cool for a sec,” one person posted online.

Why did the sun turn red?

While the visuals were stunning, the reason behind them is straightforward. Meteorologists confirmed that the red sun effect was caused by smoke from wildfires in Canada drifting into the upper atmosphere over the U.S.

Andrew Stutzke of WQAD News 8 explained that when wildfire smoke reaches high altitudes, it alters how sunlight travels through the atmosphere. The smoke filters out shorter wavelengths like blue and green, leaving longer wavelengths — red, yellow, and orange — to dominate what we see.

This scattering of light through smoke can even produce a “Second Sun” effect, where the image of the sun appears doubled or distorted. Experts noted that such visual illusions have been observed before. In fact, Dr. Robert Plot documented a “double sunset” back in 1686.

Not a glitch: Just science in action

Though the sight may have looked like something out of a movie, the explanation is rooted in atmospheric science. Whether caused by wildfires or heavy pollution, such phenomena remind us how small particles in the air can dramatically alter what we see in the sky — and stir the imagination of everyone watching.
