Mysterious radio signals burst through Antarctic ice: Could they be from the edge of the universe?

Strange upward-traveling pulses leave scientists baffled

In a startling discovery that could reshape our understanding of the cosmos, scientists have detected bizarre radio signals rising up through the Earth’s crust in Antarctica—and they may be coming from the furthest reaches of the universe.

These unexplained signals, first captured by a high-altitude experiment flying over Antarctica, appear to defy current scientific models. Researchers say the mysterious pulses suggest the presence of unknown physical phenomena, or possibly, a completely new class of cosmic particles.

Signals detected from deep within Earth’s surface

The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) — an array of scientific instruments and antennas carried on high-altitude balloons—recorded the signals while surveying the icy continent. Instead of bouncing off the surface as expected, the radio pulses were seen emerging from deep beneath the ice, traveling upwards at steep angles.

“The radio waves that we detected were at really steep angles, like 30 degrees below the surface of the ice,” said Stephanie Wissel, associate professor of physics, astronomy, and astrophysics, and a member of the ANITA team.

These signals appeared to have traveled through kilometers of dense rock, penetrating the Earth’s crust before erupting through the surface — something that should be virtually impossible under current physical models.

Signals likely not caused by neutrinos

Neutrinos—nearly massless subatomic particles known to travel from distant cosmic sources — are usually the focus of such experiments. While they rarely interact with matter, even neutrinos would not typically survive a journey through the entire Earth without being absorbed.

“It’s an interesting problem because we still don’t actually have an explanation for what those anomalies are, but what we do know is that they’re most likely not representing neutrinos,” Wissel said.

That has led scientists to question whether they may have encountered something entirely new.

A signal from the edge of the observable universe?

ANITA was specifically designed to detect faint signals produced when cosmic neutrinos interact with Antarctic ice. These particles, which originate from sources like supernovas, gamma-ray bursts, and even the Big Bang, can offer deep insights into cosmic events from millions of light-years away.

But the behavior of the Antarctic signals didn’t match neutrino interactions.

“So, this is the double-edged sword problem. If we detect them, it means they have travelled all this way without interacting with anything else. We could be detecting a neutrino coming from the edge of the observable universe,” Wissel noted.

To better understand the findings, the research team compared their data with observations from two of the world’s major neutrino observatories — the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica and the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina. No similar signals were found.

Scientists suggest new physics may be involved

After running a battery of simulations and analytical tests, researchers determined the signals were “anomalous” — behaving in a way that can’t be explained by existing theories. The study, which includes contributions from Penn State scientists, was published in Physical Review Letters.

The team believes that new particles, unfamiliar physical interactions, or even undiscovered laws of physics may be behind the radio bursts.

As Wissel and her colleagues continue their investigation, one thing is clear, these strange upward-traveling signals have opened the door to a cosmic mystery that may challenge our fundamental understanding of the universe.
