Massive shark named Contender tracked 22 miles off Cape Hatteras

A giant great white shark, nearly 14 feet in length and weighing about 1,700 pounds, was recently detected just 22 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The shark, named Contender, is the largest male ever tagged by marine research organization OCEARCH, and has been making his seasonal journey northward along the Atlantic coast.

Tagged off Florida, Contender has traveled over 1,800 miles

Contender was first tagged by OCEARCH on January 17, 2025, roughly 45 miles off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. Since then, the shark has traveled approximately 1,870 miles over the span of 142 days, moving steadily from Florida’s coastline toward North Carolina’s nutrient-rich waters.

Describing the shark as the “ultimate ocean warrior,” OCEARCH said on social media, “Every ping from Contender gives us new insight into how white sharks navigate the Atlantic. This apex predator is making moves along the coast, helping us better understand and protect these incredible animals.”

Seasonal migration brings great whites to cooler waters

According to OCEARCH, Contender’s path reflects a typical migratory pattern for great white sharks. These predators generally spend the winter months in the warmer waters of the south and migrate north in the summer in search of cooler waters and plentiful prey. The waters around the Outer Banks serve as an important stop along this route.

Each detection or “ping” from Contender’s tracking device offers researchers critical data on shark movement and behavior in the Northwest Atlantic.

Real-time tracking enhances conservation efforts

OCEARCH emphasized the importance of monitoring sharks like Contender in their efforts to improve conservation strategies. His movements can be tracked in real time through OCEARCH’s public platform, with data expected to continue streaming for up to five years thanks to his satellite tag.

By following sharks like Contender, scientists are gaining valuable insight into migration habits, feeding grounds, and long-term survival needs for one of the ocean’s most iconic apex predators.
