What did researchers find in bats from Yunnan province?

Chinese researchers have discovered 20 previously unknown bat viruses from Yunnan province—two of which are genetically close to Nipah and Hendra viruses, known for causing severe brain inflammation and respiratory illness in humans. Over four years, scientists collected kidney samples from 142 bats across ten species in five regions of Yunnan. Using advanced genetic sequencing, they identified 22 different viruses, 20 of which had never been documented before. This includes two henipaviruses, the same family that includes the deadly Nipah and Hendra viruses, which have human mortality rates ranging from 40% to 75%.

Why are henipaviruses a serious concern?
