Richard Hurst, the longtime character actor best known for playing Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at the age of 79. His first wife, Candace Kaniecki, confirmed the news to TMZ, stating that his death was unexpected and the cause is currently unknown.
Hurst passed away on Thursday in Los Angeles.
The announcement comes just days before Hurst was scheduled to make an appearance at Cooter’s Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, a museum dedicated to The Dukes of Hazzard. The venue posted on Facebook Thursday morning, citing “unforeseen circumstances” for Hurst’s absence and noting that the event would be rescheduled — a sign that his death took even close associates by surprise.
