Shipment from Vietnam: Concealed Venomous Spiders in Plastic Tubes

German customs officers were left stunned after uncovering a massive shipment of tarantulas disguised as cookies at Cologne-Bonn Airport. The shipment, weighing approximately seven kilograms (15 pounds), arrived from Vietnam and was flagged after officials noticed an unusual odor.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered around 1,500 tarantulas—many of them venomous—crammed into plastic tubes inside the package. Tragically, several spiders did not survive the journey, while the survivors have been placed under professional care.

“This unusual discovery left even the most experienced officers speechless,” said customs spokesperson Jens Ahland.

He further added, “It is deeply troubling what some people do to animals purely for profit.”

Criminal Investigation Underway

The package’s recipient is now under investigation for failing to declare the exotic animals and avoiding import duties. German customs authorities are treating the case as a serious breach of animal import and customs regulations.

Not the First Time

This is not the airport’s first brush with wildlife smuggling. In 2020, customs officers intercepted 16 live and 10 dead reptiles concealed inside toys, sweets, and dolls in a shipment from Mexico.

Authorities continue to urge vigilance against illegal wildlife trafficking, emphasising its cruelty and threat to biodiversity.
