Somerville, MA — Authorities in Massachusetts are urging residents to remain alert after a ball python was spotted on the loose in Somerville over the weekend. The non-native snake, measuring approximately 3 to 4 feet in length, was seen slithering near a sidewalk, and images of the reptile have since gone viral on social media.

Python Confirmed as Non-Venomous Pet Species

According to Somerville Animal Control, the snake seen in the photos and videos posted on Saturday has been identified as a ball python, a species commonly kept as a pet. The snake is white with black and brown patches and has not yet been captured.

Officials emphasised that ball pythons are non-venomous and generally not dangerous to humans, but residents are advised not to approach the animal if seen.

Residents Urged to Contact Police

The Somerville Police Department is asking anyone who spots the snake to immediately report the sighting by calling their local non-emergency number.

“While ball pythons are not aggressive and pose minimal risk, we want to ensure the animal is safely returned to a secure environment,” a spokesperson said.

Ball Python: Exotic but Common in U.S. Homes

Ball pythons, also known as royal pythons, are native to sub-Saharan Africa but are widely bred in the U.S. for the pet trade. They can grow up to 5 feet in length, and while typically docile, they require specific care and housing conditions.

Authorities believe the snake may have escaped or been released by its owner.
