A massive solar filament eruption on July 15 has left a scar-like indentation on the Sun, stretching hundreds of thousands of kilometers and resembling what astronomers are calling a “canyon of fire.”

The dramatic explosion occurred on the upper left side of the Sun and released a powerful surge of plasma and magnetic energy into space. The fiery gap left behind measures approximately 400,000 kilometers long and 20,000 kilometers high, according to Tony Phillips of Spaceweather.com. “It’s a grand canyon—on the Sun,” Phillips remarked.

Astronomers Were Watching

The Solar Dynamics Observatory had been monitoring the Sun closely in recent days. Astronomers had identified an unusually large, cold, and dense gas filament hovering above the Sun’s surface. When the filament collapsed, it triggered the solar eruption that was captured in real time.
