Microbiota Vault: Why Scientists Are Freezing Human Poop To Prevent a Disaster 100 Years From Now

In an ambitious and eyebrow-raising scientific endeavor, researchers are freezing human feces — not as a stunt or curiosity, but as a safeguard against a looming biological crisis. The project, known as the Microbiota Vault, aims to preserve essential gut microbes that scientists believe are disappearing at an alarming rate due to human activity. If successful, this frozen repository could one day help restore health, resilience, and biodiversity across ecosystems and human populations.
Launched in 2018 and currently housed at the University of Zurich, the Microbiota Vault is a global initiative designed to collect, freeze, and store fecal samples and fermented foods from around the world. The goal: protect microbial diversity for future generations.
Microbes — tiny organisms like bacteria, fungi, and archaea — are crucial for human health, agriculture, and the environment. But modern practices such as overuse of antibiotics, industrial agriculture, and even climate change are causing these microscopic communities to degrade or vanish entirely.

According to Dr. Martin Blaser, director of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine at Rutgers University and co-author of the project’s latest commentary in Nature Communications, “Human activities are depleting our microbiome, and there’s lots of evidence of that.” He warns that if these microbes disappear entirely, they may become impossible to replace — unless we preserve them now.
The Microbiota Vault currently stores:
All samples are stored at an ultra-low temperature of -80°C, a standard in biological preservation that halts microbial activity and degradation.

While 1,200+ samples is an impressive start, the project aims to expand rapidly — targeting 10,000 samples by 2029. Scientists believe this broad and diverse microbial archive will be key to future efforts in:
The inspiration for the Microbiota Vault comes from the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway — often dubbed the “doomsday vault” for plants. Svalbard stores over 1.3 million seed samples from nearly every country, preserving the genetic diversity of crops in case of war, climate disaster, or economic collapse.
Similarly, the Microbiota Vault aims to serve as a biological backup, but for microbes. In the event that the natural human microbiome or environmental microbes are wiped out, future scientists could retrieve and reintroduce them — assuming we develop the tools to do so effectively.

The urgency behind this project isn’t just theoretical. Studies already show that populations in industrialized nations have significantly less microbial diversity compared to more traditional societies. This microbial loss has been linked to:
And it doesn’t stop with humans. Soil health, plant resilience, and even ocean ecosystems rely on diverse microbial life. As conventional farming, climate change, and pollution continue to reshape our environment, the very microbes that once supported life may be wiped out.
While scientists like Blaser admit they can’t be sure whether reintroducing stored microbes will restore damaged systems, they remain hopeful. “Science will advance to a level where really good restorative techniques” could use these samples to make a difference, he said.

While it may sound strange, freezing human feces — and the vital microbes they contain — could be a future-proofing strategy akin to saving seeds, DNA, or data archives.
It’s not about nostalgia or curiosity. It’s about safeguarding biological tools that evolution gave us — tools we’re currently squandering. In a century’s time, if microbial ecosystems collapse further and today’s treatments fail, the frozen gut flora stored today might offer the foundation for regenerative medicine or ecological revival.
“This is an obligation to the future generations,” Blaser concluded. “It’s our insurance policy against a microbial extinction we’re actively causing.”
