Thailand Man Dies After Drinking Only Beer For A Month: A Tragic Tale of Grief, Addiction, and Mental Health

A 44-year-old man in Thailand died after drinking only beer for a month, allegedly following a depressive episode triggered by divorce. His son, just 16, tried to care for him, but the father refused food and eventually died after a seizure. The case underscores the fatal intersection of untreated mental illness and substance dependence and serves as a chilling reminder of the importance of early intervention and social support.
In a deeply unsettling incident from Thailand, a 44-year-old man identified as Thaweesak Namwongsa was found dead in his bedroom after reportedly subsisting on nothing but beer for an entire month. According to his 16-year-old son, the man stopped eating following a painful divorce and sank into a depressive spiral that led to his extreme behavior.
When the teenager returned home from school one afternoon, he discovered his father unconscious and suffering a seizure. Emergency responders from the Siam Rayong Foundation were called to the scene in the Ban Chang district of Rayong province. Despite their efforts, the man could not be revived.

The boy told authorities that his father had not touched food in weeks despite repeated attempts to feed him. He had been consuming only beer, evidenced by the 100+ empty bottles scattered around the small room where he was found.
The death followed a recent divorce that, according to the son’s statements, left Namwongsa devastated. Grief and isolation are powerful psychological stressors. In this case, they seem to have triggered a dangerous combination of alcoholism and disordered eating—ultimately leading to fatal consequences.
Alcohol, in excessive quantities, can suppress appetite and alter both physical and mental health functions. But a complete refusal to eat—paired with binge drinking—is often indicative of deeper mental health issues such as depression or suicidal ideation.

There is a dangerous myth—often joked about but rarely taken seriously—that beer, with its high caloric content, can act as a food substitute. While beer does contain carbohydrates, it lacks essential nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, and fats. A beer-only diet is not only nutritionally insufficient but also toxic when sustained over long periods.
Surviving on alcohol alone has severe consequences:
In short, this is not just a cautionary tale about alcohol abuse—it underscores how malnutrition and neglect can rapidly turn deadly.

The image described by paramedics paints a bleak picture. Over 100 empty beer bottles were found strewn across the room—so many that only a narrow walking path remained. This wasn’t just clutter—it was a visual manifestation of despair.
The sheer quantity of beer bottles and the boy’s consistent reports of his father’s refusal to eat suggest that this was not a momentary lapse but a deliberate withdrawal from life. This visual could potentially serve as a powerful reminder for campaigns around substance abuse and mental health awareness.
Thailand has one of the highest alcohol consumption rates in Southeast Asia, particularly among men. Despite campaigns to raise awareness, binge drinking remains socially acceptable in many circles, often treated more as a rite of masculinity than a public health issue.

According to the World Health Organization, alcohol contributes to over 3 million deaths globally each year. In Thailand alone, alcohol-related disorders and accidents are among the leading causes of hospitalization.
Mental health support in Thailand remains underdeveloped. Access to psychiatric care and counseling—especially in semi-rural districts like Ban Chang—is limited. Social stigma also prevents many men from seeking help, especially after events like divorce, which may be perceived as personal failure.
In this case, it’s possible that with timely intervention—be it from neighbors, community health workers, or even the education system—a life could have been saved.
