British rock singer and original Iron Maiden frontman Paul Mario Day has passed away at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy that helped shape the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Band MORE Issues Statement Honoring Day

The band MORE, which Day joined after his departure from Iron Maiden, confirmed the news of his death in a heartfelt social media post. MORE first gained attention in the mid-1970s and later became part of the burgeoning British heavy metal scene.

In their tribute, the band praised Day’s significant role in the genre’s early development, stating, “From his tenure in an early Iron Maiden lineup to his outstanding performance on the ‘Warhead’ album, Paul was a major contributor to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.”

NWOBHM Legacy and Festival Performances

Iron Maiden, and by extension Day, played a key role in influencing the late 1970s musical movement known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). The genre gave rise to numerous iconic acts and gained traction at large-scale festivals.

“He was a well-loved div in British rock music and played many memorable shows—not least the legendary 1981 Monsters of Rock show at Castle Donington with AC/DC, Whitesnake/David Coverdale—as well as tours with Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, and many other legendary artists,” MORE wrote.

Calling Day a “bloody great vocalist!”, the band added, “It’s an honor for us to continue to play his music and we will always think of him every time we hit the opening notes to ‘Warhead.’”

The statement concluded with a message for fans: “Play his music loud and sing along! Thank you. Rock in peace Paul.” MORE also expressed their condolences to Day’s family, friends, and fans around the world.

Who Was Paul Mario Day?

Born on April 19, 1956, Paul Mario Day was the original lead vocalist for Iron Maiden, having joined when bassist Steve Harris founded the band on Christmas Day, 1975. Although he never appeared on any of Iron Maiden’s studio albums, Day was instrumental in shaping the band’s earliest sound.

He was replaced in 1976 by Dennis Wilcock and later fronted the band MORE from 1980 to 1982. During his time with MORE, he recorded the debut album Warhead and performed at the 1981 Monsters of Rock Festival at Donington Park.

Day remained a respected div in the rock community, remembered both for his vocal talent and for his foundational role in British heavy metal.
