A Child Older Than His Parents? Ohio Baby Born From 30-Year-Old Embryo Sets New Record

Thaddeus Daniel Pierce’s birth breaks medical records—and opens a new chapter in embryo adoption

In a remarkable milestone for science and reproductive medicine, a baby boy named Thaddeus Daniel Pierce was born in Ohio on July 26, 2025, from an embryo that had been frozen for over 30 years, making it one of the longest-preserved embryos ever successfully brought to term.

His mother, Lindsey Pierce, described the experience as “rough but miraculous,” saying, “He is so chill. We are in awe that we have this precious baby!”

Thaddeus’ story is not just about biology; it’s also a deeply human tale of hope, perseverance, and unconventional family-building—one that sounds more like science fiction than science fact.

From 1994 to 2025: A frozen embryo’s incredible journey

The embryo that became Thaddeus was created in May 1994 during a round of in vitro fertilization (IVF) by Linda Archerd, now 62. After years of failed attempts to conceive, she and her then-husband turned to IVF, which was still a relatively new procedure in the early 1990s. The process resulted in four embryos. One was implanted into Archerd, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby girl, now a 30-year-old mother herself. The remaining three embryos were cryopreserved and stored.

Archerd, who had long considered the embryos “my three little hopes,” eventually divorced but retained legal custody of the embryos, continuing to store them for decades in hopes of expanding her family.

Over the years, however, reality set in. After entering menopause, Archerd decided she would not be able to carry more children herself, but she also wasn’t ready to discard the embryos or anonymously donate them for research. She wanted to know the future parents and maintain some level of connection to the biological siblings of her daughter.

Finding a family through embryo “adoption”

Archerd turned to embryo adoption—a niche but growing practice in which embryos are donated by one family to another through a structured, often faith-based process. She was eventually matched through Snowflakes, an embryo donation program operated by Nightlight Christian Adoptions, one of the few agencies willing to accept embryos that had been stored for such a long time.

However, even Snowflakes needed extensive documentation, including medical and lab records from the 1990s. In a remarkable stroke of fate, Archerd was able to track down her original fertility doctor, who, still practicing in his 70s, found her handwritten files stored in his basement.

By 2022, Archerd’s embryos were placed into the agency’s matching pool, and eventually, Lindsey and Tim Pierce of London, Ohio, were selected as adoptive parents.

A child older than his parents?

Though born in 2025, the embryo that became Thaddeus is genetically 30 years older. His biological sister is already a mother to a 10-year-old child. Tim Pierce, the adoptive father, was himself a toddler when the embryos were first created in 1994.

“It’s been pretty surreal,” Archerd said, reflecting on the emotional and biological ripple effect of a decision she made decades ago. “It’s hard to even believe.”

For Lindsey and Tim, the decision to adopt an embryo came from a place of love and awe. Their faith community, she says, sees the entire experience as “something out of a sci-fi movie.”

The risks and realities of old embryos

While the emotional impact of Thaddeus’ birth is profound, there’s also scientific significance. Embryos stored for decades are often viewed with caution by fertility clinics due to the risks associated with older cryopreservation methods. Many agencies don’t even consider accepting embryos frozen for more than 10 to 15 years due to concerns about viability.

Archerd faced repeated rejection until Snowflakes agreed to take on the challenge. That decision and Thaddeus’ healthy birth could change how medicine views long-frozen embryos going forward.

Redefining modern family and legacy

Thaddeus’ birth is not only a triumph of science but also of belief, persistence, and ethical nuance. The Pierces plan to be open about his origins, ensuring he grows up knowing the extraordinary circumstances of his birth and his connection to the Archerd family.

For Archerd, Thaddeus represents more than a medical miracle—he is the fulfillment of a promise made to herself decades ago. “I always thought it was the right thing to do,” she said.

Now, one of her “three little hopes” is a real, living part of the world—proving that some dreams, even frozen in time, can still come true.
