A major recall has been initiated by Ford Motor Co. affecting five popular models from its 2025 lineup due to a potential brake system failure that could pose a serious safety hazard.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Friday that Ford is recalling 312,120 vehicles over concerns that a defective brake module could result in the loss of power brake assist, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

Models Affected

The recall includes specific units of the following 2025 models:

All affected vehicles are equipped with Ford’s Electronic Brake Booster (EBB) system, a component critical for reducing braking effort and enhancing driver control during braking events, especially when integrated with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Nature of the Defect

According to the NHTSA, the issue arises from a potential failure of the EBB module, which can occur either during normal driving or while utilizing features of ADAS, such as adaptive cruise control or automated emergency braking. In the event of a failure, the power brake assist may be lost, forcing drivers to apply significantly more pressure on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. This could lead to longer stopping distances and increased chances of a collision, particularly in emergency braking situations.

Ford’s Response and Repair Plan

In response to the NHTSA’s findings, Ford has confirmed that it will update the EBB module software, which controls the power brake assist system. The software update will be rolled out either over-the-air (OTA) or performed at authorized Ford and Lincoln dealerships free of charge to the vehicle owners.

Affected customers will be notified directly by Ford through official communication channels, and the recall service is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

No Reported Injuries—Yet

As of now, no accidents or injuries related to this defect have been reported, but NHTSA stressed that the potential safety implications warranted swift action. The recall is classified as a preventive safety measure.

Background: Mounting Pressure on Automakers

This recall comes at a time of heightened regulatory scrutiny and increasing pressure on automakers to ensure software reliability in the era of semi-autonomous driving systems. Earlier this year, Ford pulled its 2025 financial guidance and forecasted a $1.5 billion impact from tariffs and broader economic uncertainties, according to a company statement released in May.

In a press briefing on Friday, a Ford spokesperson reiterated the company’s commitment to safety:
“We are working closely with our dealer network and regulatory agencies to ensure affected vehicles are updated quickly and efficiently. Customer safety is our top priority.”

What Drivers Should Do

Owners of the affected models are advised to:

  • Check Ford’s recall website using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Watch for notification letters or emails from Ford
  • Schedule a service appointment at a local dealership if you are not eligible for OTA updates
