Who Is Victoria Mboko? Teen Sensation Who Stunned Naomi Osaka at the National Bank Open

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko pulled off the biggest win of her young career by defeating Japanese star and former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to capture her first WTA title at the National Bank Open in Toronto on Friday morning. The victory capped off a dream run at the tournament and placed the 18-year-old in an elite group of Canadians to win their home event in the Open Era, joining Faye Urban in 1969 and Bianca Andreescu in 2019.

The title will propel Mboko from her current world ranking of 85th into the top 25, marking a significant leap in her professional journey.

Emotional Victory in Front of a Home Crowd

The atmosphere at Sobeys Stadium was electric as Mboko sealed the match with a shot into the net from Osaka, immediately dropping to her knees in disbelief. The crowd erupted in celebration, with the noise at times so loud that the chair umpire had to ask fans to remain quiet during points.

Mboko’s tenacity shone through in the match’s statistics—she converted eight of nine break-point opportunities and was part of a staggering 13 service breaks in just 25 games.

A Record-Setting Tournament

Mboko became the second-youngest player in the Open Era to defeat four Grand Slam champions in a single tournament, behind only Serena Williams at the 1999 US Open. Her road to the title included wins over Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin, and Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina before her showdown with Osaka.

She is also only the third wild card to win a WTA 1000 title, following Maria Sharapova in Cincinnati in 2011 and Andreescu in Indian Wells in 2019. Additionally, she is the second-lowest-ranked player ever to win a WTA 1000 or Tier-1 event since the category began in 1990.

Roots and Early Development

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Congolese parents Cyprien and Godee, Mboko is the youngest of four siblings, all of whom share a passion for tennis. Her older sister, Gracia, and brother, Kevin, played collegiate tennis in the United States. The family later relocated to Toronto, where Mboko’s career began to gain serious momentum.

She eventually trained at the renowned Justine Henin Academy in Belgium, refining her technique and competitive mindset.

Junior Circuit Success

Mboko’s rise in tennis has been rapid and consistent. At just 12 years old, she reached the U14 final of the prestigious Orange Bowl in 2018. She later competed in the junior draws of all four Grand Slam events, reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2022.

Her abilities extend beyond singles. Partnering with fellow Canadian Kayla Cross, Mboko reached the junior doubles finals at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2022.

Naomi Osaka’s Comeback Continues

For Osaka, the defeat still marked a personal milestone—it was her best result at a WTA 1000 event since reaching the Miami final in 2022. The four-time Grand Slam champion had taken a 15-month break from tennis before giving birth to her daughter Shai in July 2023.

Osaka has struggled to find her winning touch at major tournaments since capturing the 2021 Australian Open title, but has shown glimpses of her former form in recent months.
