Al Jazeera Journalist Anas Al Sharif Killed in Gaza Airstrike, Sparking Global Condemnation

A prominent Al Jazeera correspondent, Anas Al Sharif, was killed alongside four of his colleagues in an Israeli airstrike on Sunday in Gaza City — a strike condemned by journalists, rights groups, and Qatar’s leadership. Israel’s military claims Al Sharif led a Hamas militant cell, but Al Jazeera and press freedom advocates have rejected those allegations, saying the attack represents a targeted assault on journalism.
According to Gaza officials and Al Jazeera, the strike hit a tent near Al Shifa Hospital in eastern Gaza City. In addition to Al Sharif, 28, the attack killed three other Al Jazeera journalists, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohammed Noufal, as well as an assistant. Hospital officials reported that two other people also died in the strike.
On Monday, medics confirmed a sixth journalist, local freelance reporter Mohammad Al-Khaldi, also died from the same airstrike.

Mourners gathered at Sheikh Radwan Cemetery in Gaza to bury the journalists, embracing one another through tears. Friends and colleagues described Al Sharif as “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists.”
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strike targeted Al Sharif because he allegedly headed a Hamas cell “responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops,” citing intelligence and documents found in Gaza. No evidence has yet been made public.
Israel denies deliberately targeting journalists, insisting that many killed in its airstrikes were “members of Islamist militant groups working under the guise of the press.”

Al Jazeera, funded by the Qatari government, has categorically denied the accusations, calling them “fabricated evidence” and part of a “desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza.”
Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, condemned the killings on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “The deliberate targeting of journalists by Israel in the Gaza Strip reveals how these crimes are beyond imagination.”
The war between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023, has become the deadliest conflict on record for journalists.

Press freedom groups and a United Nations expert had previously warned that Al Sharif’s life was in danger. U.N. Special Rapporteur Irene Khan said last month that Israel’s accusations against him were unsubstantiated.
In October 2023, Israel named Al Sharif as one of six Gaza journalists it claimed were members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad, citing unnamed documents. CPJ stated in July that Israel had failed to provide any evidence for these claims.
Al Jazeera revealed that Al Sharif had recorded a message for release if he was killed. In it, he said: “…I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent.”

Minutes before his death, Al Sharif posted to his 500,000 followers on X that Israel had been bombarding Gaza City heavily for more than two hours.
Hamas described the killings as a precursor to a new Israeli offensive in Gaza City, warning that “the assassination of journalists and the intimidation of those who remain paves the way for a major crime.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to launch a new offensive to dismantle Hamas strongholds. The statement comes as the humanitarian situation worsens in Gaza, with hunger levels reaching critical levels after nearly two years of war.
Al Sharif’s death spotlights the peril faced by journalists covering active war zones, especially in Gaza, where independent reporting is already heavily constrained.
International observers say the strike raises pressing questions: Was this a legitimate military action against a combatant, or a deliberate attempt to silence critical reporting from inside Gaza? The absence of publicly shared evidence from Israel will likely fuel ongoing debate.
For many, Al Sharif and his colleagues represented some of the last on-the-ground voices documenting the war’s toll. As Al Jazeera put it: “Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues were among the last remaining voices in Gaza conveying the tragic reality to the world.”
