Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Threatens India With Nukes, Targets Dams and Ambani

Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has issued one of his most provocative warnings yet to India, reportedly threatening nuclear retaliation, destruction of dams, and even making personal references to industrialist Mukesh Ambani. The remarks, reported by The Print, were allegedly made during a black-tie event in Tampa, Florida, marking the first known instance of such threats being delivered from U.S. soil against a third country.

What did Asim Munir say?

According to the report, Asim Munir declared that Pakistan would be willing to “take half the world down” if it faced an existential threat in a future conflict with India.

“We are a nuclear nation; if we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us,” Munir was quoted as saying.

His comments also included a threat to destroy planned Indian dams on the Indus River, a move he claimed would put “250 million people at risk of starvation” if New Delhi proceeded.

“We will wait for India to build a dam, and when it does so, phir 10 missile sey faarigh kar dengey (we will destroy it with 10 missiles). The Indus River is not the Indians’ family property. Humein missilon ki kami nahin hai (we have no shortage of missiles),” Asim Munir reportedly said.

Targeting Mukesh Ambani

In a particularly personal reference, Asim Munir recounted ordering a tweet featuring a Quranic verse (Surah Fil) alongside a picture of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani to convey what Pakistan “will do the next time.” Surah Fil describes a divine act of destroying an enemy’s forces with a rain of stones from birds, leaving them “like chewed-up straw.”

Why the Indus Waters Treaty is at the center of tensions

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan, governs the sharing of six major rivers in the Indus basin. India recently placed the treaty “in abeyance” following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed dozens of civilians and security personnel.

New Delhi has argued that Pakistan has failed to curb cross-border terrorism, while Islamabad claims that India’s move risks food and water security for millions of Pakistanis. Munir’s remarks suggest that Islamabad views Indian dam construction as a strategic threat to its survival.

The backdrop: Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor

Tensions escalated sharply after the Pahalgam terror attack, which India has blamed on Pakistan-based militants. In response, New Delhi launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps and military installations across the border.

The four-day exchange included:

  • Indian air strikes on multiple Pakistani air bases.
  • Interceptions of missile and drone attacks from Pakistan.
  • Public announcements from New Delhi on reducing Pakistan’s diplomatic presence and expelling military attaches.

Islamabad has denied direct involvement in the Pahalgam attack, accusing India of “unprovoked aggression” and lacking “strategic foresight.”

Why Munir’s remarks from U.S. soil matter

Diplomatic analysts note that this is the first known case of a Pakistani military leader issuing nuclear threats against India while speaking in the United States.

Munir’s Florida remarks came during his second U.S. visit in two months, which included:

  • A private lunch at the White House hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump.
  • Meetings with U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff General John Dan Caine.

While the public agenda highlighted “matters of mutual professional interest,” the nuclear rhetoric may complicate Washington’s balancing act in South Asia, where it maintains strategic ties with both India and Pakistan.

The nuclear overhang in South Asia

Both India and Pakistan possess nuclear arsenals, with each side maintaining doctrines that leave room for rapid escalation in the event of large-scale conflict.

Military experts warn that nuclear signaling, such as Munir’s comments, increases risks during periods of heightened tension. The region’s history of crises — from the 1999 Kargil War to the 2019 Balakot air strikes — shows how quickly conventional confrontations can spiral into strategic standoffs.

What happens next?

  • India’s likely response: New Delhi has not officially commented on the reported speech, but past precedent suggests a firm rejection of threats and a reiteration of its stance on cross-border terrorism.
  • U.S. reaction: Washington has not yet issued a statement on the remarks. Any public comment could be shaped by broader U.S. strategic interests in countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.
  • Regional stability: With water rights, cross-border militancy, and nuclear posturing now interlinked, the potential for miscalculation remains high.
