Israeli Hospital Grows Lab-Made Kidneys, Eyes Clinical Trials

A medical breakthrough in regenerative science

In a development that could reshape the future of organ transplantation, Sheba Medical Center in Israel, working with Tel Aviv University, has successfully grown kidney organoids, synthetic 3D mini-organs that survived for more than 34 weeks in the lab.

This is a dramatic leap forward. Until now, lab-grown kidneys typically deteriorated within four weeks. Researchers say the achievement marks a milestone in regenerative medicine and could one day ease the global shortage of organs for transplantation.

Why kidney organoids matter

Kidney organoids are not yet fully functional organs, but they mimic many structures and behaviors of real kidneys. According to Dr. Benjamin Dekel, director of Sheba’s Pediatric Nephrology Unit and Stem Cell Research Institute, these organoids serve two critical roles:

  • Disease modeling: They allow scientists to replicate kidney diseases at a cellular level, improving understanding of how conditions develop.
  • Drug testing: They reduce reliance on animal testing, enabling earlier and more precise screening of potential treatments.

“Once we have a clear understanding of which cells to use, the biomolecules they secrete, and how they aid in kidney repair in adults, we can begin moving towards clinical translation,” Dekel explained.

From lab bench to patient bedside, not yet

Despite the excitement, Dekel cautioned that clinical application is still some way off. Translating basic science into approved therapies requires time, rigorous testing, and regulatory clearance.

Unlike traditional transplants, this approach may not require implanting entire lab-grown kidneys. Instead, researchers believe that molecules secreted by the organoids could help repair or regenerate damaged kidney tissue in patients.

Funding and global interest

To move into clinical trials, Sheba Medical Center is now seeking additional funding, including partnerships with Chinese and Hong Kong biotech firms.

“We have a huge interest in Chinese and Hong Kong biotech companies, and I also think they have an interest in tackling problems such as chronic kidney diseases. We are open to commercialization,” Dekel told reporters.

The demand is undeniable. According to a study published in the Clinical Kidney Journal, China alone has an estimated 150.5 million kidney disease patients. That div underscores the urgency of developing new treatments beyond dialysis and transplantation.

What comes next?

The Sheba-Tel Aviv team is focused on:

  • Identifying the most effective stem cells for generating kidney organoids.
  • Studying the biomolecules these organoids release.
  • Testing how these molecules contribute to kidney repair in animal and preclinical models.

Dekel expressed optimism about the future:

“I’m very, very optimistic about the path forward. It doesn’t involve cell transplantation, but rather the molecules the organoid secretes. These can help repair injured kidneys.”

If successful, the research could not only ease transplant shortages but also transform treatment for chronic kidney disease, which affects more than 850 million people worldwide, according to the International Society of Nephrology.
