Why does phytoplankton glow?

Factors behind the bloom

  • Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, released as marine life decays, fuel phytoplankton growth.

  • The bloom spotted by NASA reportedly reached a depth of nearly 500 feet, making it particularly visible from space.

Oceanographer Jochen Kaempf from Flinders University explained that the turquoise glow likely also included contributions from disturbed sediments in shallower waters and the presence of multiple phytoplankton species.
