Missing Teen Dacara Thompson Confirmed Dead, Maryland Man Charged With Murder

The two-week search for 19-year-old Dacara Thompson, who vanished in late August from Prince George’s County, Maryland, has come to a heartbreaking end. Authorities confirmed that her body was found in a grassy area off Route 50, and a 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with her death.
Dacara Thompson, a Lanham resident and recent high school graduate, was reported missing by her family on August 23 after she failed to return home. Just hours earlier, she had texted relatives saying she would be home soon.
The following day, police discovered her abandoned car in Hyattsville, sparking an intensive search effort.

Surveillance video became a turning point in the investigation. Detectives said the footage showed Thompson approaching a black SUV in the early hours of August 23. She appeared to speak with the driver before entering the vehicle.
The SUV was later traced to a residence on Kembridge Drive in Bowie, Maryland. Investigators said Hugo Hernandez-Mendez, 35, lived in the home and had access to the vehicle.
When police searched the property on Thursday, they reportedly found evidence suggesting Thompson had been killed inside a bedroom of the residence.

On August 31, Maryland State Police launched a death investigation after a woman’s body was found in a grassy area along Route 50 in Anne Arundel County. That body has since been confirmed as Thompson’s.
While the cause of death has not yet been finalized, investigators believe the manner of death will be ruled homicide.
Prince George’s County Police announced Friday that Hernandez-Mendez has been arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder in Thompson’s death. He is being held without bond.
