Mother launches fundraiser as details of case remain unclear

A 23-year-old British woman has been sentenced to life in prison in Dubai after what her family describes as a “very stupid mistake” in the United Arab Emirates, a country known for its strict laws and harsh penalties.

Mia O’Brien, a law student, is now being held in Dubai’s central prison. Her mother, Danielle McKenna, 46, has launched an online fundraiser to cover legal fees and travel costs, saying the family has not been able to see Mia since October 2023.

“Absolutely devastated”

In a post on the fundraising page, McKenna wrote:

“Mia has been given a life sentence over in Dubai and she is now in central prison. As you can all probably imagine, as her mother I am absolutely devastated. I haven’t seen my daughter since last October.”

She added that her daughter, who she described as “a young girl who went to university to do law,” had “never done a bad thing in her life” but had “got mixed up in the wrong so-called friends and made a very stupid mistake and is now paying the price.”

McKenna appealed for donations, saying contributions, even as small as £1, could make a difference in supporting her daughter’s legal fight and helping the family visit her in Dubai.

What does a life sentence mean in Dubai?

While full details of Mia’s crime have not been made public, under Emirati law, life sentences typically apply to serious offenses such as

• Drug trafficking or possession of large quantities
• Violent crimes
• Terrorism-related activities

Unlike in the UK, a “life sentence” in Dubai is legally defined as 15 years in prison. However, penalties can extend further depending on the crime.

According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the UAE enforces “zero tolerance for drug-related offenses.” Even residual amounts of drugs, such as traces found in a person’s bloodstream, can lead to prosecution.

The FCDO warns that:

• Possession of the smallest amounts can mean at least three months in prison.
• Fines for drug offenses range from 20,000 UAE dirhams (£4,000) to 100,000 UAE dirhams (£20,000).
• Drug trafficking convictions can result in life sentences or, in extreme cases, the death penalty.

Family thanks supporters

In a follow-up message, McKenna expressed gratitude to those who had donated, saying the money would be used both for legal expenses and to help relatives travel to Dubai.

“This money will be used to send to my daughter Mia, and also for any legal fees that may arise, and maybe even to go towards getting family over to Dubai to see her… thank you all so much.”

A cautionary tale for British travelers

The case highlights the risks faced by visitors to the UAE, where laws on drugs, alcohol, and public behavior are far stricter than in the UK.

British citizens are regularly reminded by the FCDO to take particular care in Dubai, especially regarding drugs. Even legal prescriptions from the UK may be banned in the Emirates without prior approval.

While the circumstances of Mia O’Brien’s case remain unclear, her sentencing is a stark reminder of how quickly a misstep abroad can have lifelong consequences.
