Howard Stern Abruptly Departs SiriusXM After Nearly 20 Years

Howard Stern, the radio personality who transformed satellite radio into a mainstream medium, has unexpectedly left SiriusXM after nearly two decades at the company.

The 71-year-old broadcaster, long known as the self-proclaimed “King of All Media,” was absent from his channel Monday morning. Instead, a visibly unsettled Andy Cohen filled in.

“I know you’re expecting a big announcement from Howard, and this is not how things were meant to go,” Cohen told listeners. “This was supposed to be a cleaner hand off. I’m kind of winging it. It’s a surreal morning here.”

Why Howard Stern’s exit matters

Stern’s 2006 move from terrestrial radio to what was then Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. was a seismic shift. His reported $500 million contract not only made him one of the highest-paid divs in broadcasting but also validated satellite radio as more than a niche service.

At its peak, SiriusXM devoted an entire navigation tab to him on its homepage, right alongside Music, Talk & Podcasts, and Sports. He wasn’t just a star on the platform, he was the star.

Without Stern, SiriusXM faces the challenge of filling a void left by the personality who helped define its identity.

What led to his departure?

Stern had twice renewed his deal, in 2010 and again in 2020, with another blockbuster five-year contract reportedly worth $500 million, according to Forbes. That agreement was set to run through the end of 2025.

The timing of his exit, however, comes after weeks of cryptic promos teasing a “big reveal.” One video leaned into tabloid rumors: “Howard Stern fired, canceled. Is it really bye-bye Booey?” His sudden absence last week, after postponing his return from summer break, only fueled speculation.

Neither Stern nor SiriusXM has offered clarity on whether this was a retirement, a firing, or a mutual parting of ways.

The business backdrop: SiriusXM under pressure

Stern’s departure lands at a challenging moment for SiriusXM.

  • Subscribers: The company reported 33 million paid subscribers in Q2 2025, down 68,000 from the first quarter and 100,000 from the same period in 2024.
  • Competition: SiriusXM is battling not just a saturated satellite market but also free, ad-supported platforms like Spotify and YouTube, which continue to siphon listeners.
  • Content expansion: In recent years, the company has tried to diversify, adding podcasts such as Call Her Daddy, SmartLess, and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, along with high-profile talent including Trevor Noah, Kevin Hart, and Stephen A. Smith.

Even so, Stern remained the face of SiriusXM. His exit raises questions about whether new voices can keep long-time subscribers from canceling.

Stern’s evolution from shock jock to master interviewer

Stern’s reputation was built in the 1980s and ’90s at New York’s WXRK, where his syndicated show drew more than 20 million listeners across 60 markets. He became infamous for outrageous bits — strippers in the studio, no-holds-barred celebrity interviews, and constant clashes with the FCC.

By the time he joined Sirius, he had become both a symbol of free speech and a lightning rod for controversy. Yet in recent years, Stern reinvented himself, earning praise for deeply personal interviews with stars like Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen.

His 1997 autobiographical film Private Parts was a box-office hit, and his bestselling books and stint as a judge on America’s Got Talent (2012–2015) only broadened his reach.

What comes next for Howard Stern and SiriusXM?

SiriusXM president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein hinted in 2024 that Stern could walk away whenever he pleased: “Nobody will ever replace them. We would never try to replace them.”

That raises key questions:

  • For Stern: Is this a quiet retirement, a contract dispute, or a setup for a new venture — possibly in podcasting, where top creators now command massive deals?
  • For SiriusXM: Can the platform lean on its podcast portfolio and celebrity roster to retain subscribers, or will Stern loyalists cancel? If history is a guide, Stern may not be done with media altogether. But for SiriusXM, the post-Stern era begins with more uncertainty than clarity.

TL;DR

Howard Stern, the legendary broadcaster who made satellite radio a household term, has abruptly left SiriusXM after nearly 20 years. His departure comes amid subscriber losses and growing competition. For SiriusXM, it’s the end of an era — and the start of a difficult transition.
