She Found Her Naked Pics and Sex Videos Online and Is Suing Google. Why the ‘Our Nudes Not Your Business’ Case Could Reshape Privacy Rights

A German woman’s lawsuit against Google over stolen nude photos and sex videos has ignited a debate on online privacy, digital safety, and the responsibility of tech giants. The case, backed by the non-profit HateAid and dubbed Our Nudes Not Your Business, could become a defining moment for the “right to be forgotten” in the age of AI-generated deepfakes.
The plaintiff, identified in court documents only as Laura, discovered by chance that her private nude photos and sex videos—stolen from her Google Cloud storage—were easily accessible through Google search. Alongside her personal ID, the content had been posted on multiple pornographic websites.
When Laura searched her own name, she found more than 2,000 links pointing to these images and videos. Despite repeated removal requests, the content resurfaced, this time accompanied by AI-generated deepfakes that further blurred the line between what was real and what was fabricated.

Unable to stop the cycle of reappearance, Laura filed a lawsuit against Google in Ireland, where the company’s European headquarters are located. HateAid, a German non-profit focused on digital rights, is covering the costs of the case.
HateAid has launched a campaign under this slogan to emphasize that intimate content—whether stolen, manipulated, or fabricated—should never become a commercial product indexed and amplified by search engines.
Josephine Ballon, HateAid’s CEO, argued that most victims cannot imagine taking on a corporation as powerful as Google. The campaign’s goal is to make this not just one woman’s fight but a broader push for systemic accountability.

At the heart of the lawsuit lies the right to be forgotten, first recognized in a 2014 ruling by the European Court of Justice. That ruling established that individuals could demand the removal of personal information from search results under certain circumstances.
However, the case of Laura raises new, urgent questions:
According to data protection expert Marit Hansen, while filtering identical copies is technically straightforward, variations such as cropped images or synthetic deepfakes pose significant challenges. Still, she argues, the psychological burden of victims having to continuously police their own names online is unsustainable.

Women disproportionately suffer from non-consensual image abuse. From “revenge porn” to hacked cloud accounts to deepfake pornography, intimate visuals are often weaponized to shame, silence, or exploit women.
As Hansen noted, today “all you really need is a LinkedIn profile picture” for someone to create explicit deepfakes. Without stricter regulations and proactive intervention from platforms, victims are forced into endless cycles of reporting, removal requests, and retraumatization.
This lawsuit could help set clearer obligations for search engines and increase pressure on lawmakers to criminalize non-consensual deepfakes—a step many digital rights advocates argue is overdue.

This remains one of the most debated points. On one hand, Google already uses reverse image search and automated filtering technologies, suggesting that blocking exact duplicates is achievable. On the other hand, AI-generated deepfakes and altered visuals complicate enforcement.
Tech companies often argue that they cannot control the entire internet and that responsibility lies with the websites hosting the material. But critics counter that Google amplifies harm by indexing and making stolen or fake content searchable, effectively giving abusers a global platform.
The lawsuit could force courts to decide whether partial compliance is enough—or whether Google and other search engines must adopt a “zero tolerance” approach to intimate imagery.

The threat is not confined to ordinary users. Celebrities and political divs have also been victims of hacking and deepfake abuse. The 2014 “Celebgate” scandal saw leaked iCloud photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other high-profile women spread online. More recently, leaders such as Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have been targeted with explicit deepfakes.
These cases highlight that no one is immune. The risks of cloud storage, inadequate safeguards, and unchecked AI manipulation affect both private citizens and public divs alike.
If the court rules in Laura’s favor, it could redefine how search engines are held accountable under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). A ruling could require Google and others to implement more aggressive tools to detect and block re-uploads of reported content.
It could also accelerate international debates on:
As Ballon from HateAid put it, “This is not just about Laura. This is about whether ordinary people have a chance to defend their dignity in a digital world dominated by Big Tech.”
A German woman is suing Google after her stolen nude photos and sex videos—plus AI-generated deepfakes—appeared in search results. The case, supported by HateAid, could set a landmark precedent for online privacy and the “right to be forgotten.” It raises urgent questions about Google’s responsibility to permanently remove intimate images, the role of search engines in amplifying abuse, and the broader need to criminalize non-consensual deepfakes.
