The transmissions contained strings of letters and numbers, including the call sign “NZHTI,” previously used in May during a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Why is it called “Doomsday Radio”?

Since the 1970s, UVB-76 has transmitted a continuous low-frequency buzzing noise on shortwave radio. Occasionally, the buzz is interrupted by coded voice messages. Because of its Cold War origins and secrecy, many believe the station is tied to Russia’s nuclear command-and-control system — a fail-safe that could be activated if Moscow were attacked.

Earlier this year, UVB-76 transmitted two similar coded bursts during the Trump-Putin call:
