Russia’s infamous “Doomsday Radio,” officially known as UVB-76, broke its usual static and buzzing routine on Monday (September 8), transmitting two cryptic coded messages. The transmissions contained strings of letters and numbers, including the call sign “NZHTI,” previously used in May during a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The mysterious station, believed to be located about 18 miles from Moscow, has long been a subject of Cold War speculation.

Why is it called “Doomsday Radio”?

Since the 1970s, UVB-76 has transmitted a continuous low-frequency buzzing noise on shortwave radio. Occasionally, the buzz is interrupted by coded voice messages. Because of its Cold War origins and secrecy, many believe the station is tied to Russia’s nuclear command-and-control system — a fail-safe that could be activated if Moscow were attacked.

Other theories include:

• A “Dead Man’s Switch”: If the buzzing ever stops, it might trigger an automatic retaliatory nuclear strike.
• A military communications channel: Relaying encrypted orders to remote Russian outposts.
• More fringe ideas: A UFO beacon or even a mind-control device.

The September 8 transmission included the phrases “NZHTI” and “HOTEL,” followed by numbers such as 38, 965, 78, 58, 88, and 37. Like previous broadcasts, the meaning remains undeciphered.

Earlier this year, UVB-76 transmitted two similar coded bursts during the Trump-Putin call:

• “NZhTI 01263 BOLTANKA 4430 9529”

While amateur radio enthusiasts captured and shared the audio, no one outside Russia’s defense circles knows their true purpose.
