The grisly beheading

Police and eyewitnesses described the killing as “sick and disturbing.” Investigators say Cobos-Martinez chased Nagamallaiah outside the motel, slashing him multiple times before decapitating him.

In a chilling detail, witnesses said the suspect kicked the victim’s severed head into the parking lot before placing it in a dumpster. Officers later arrested him nearby, still wearing a bloodstained shirt and carrying the machete.

Attack in front of wife and son

The victim—known as “Bob” among family and friends—was attacked in full view of his wife and son. Witnesses told CBS News that his family members desperately tried to shield him but were unable to stop the suspect.

“This unimaginable tragedy was not only sudden but also deeply traumatic,” a friend of the victim said. “Bob’s life was taken in a brutal attack that occurred in front of his wife and son, who bravely tried to protect him. The shocking nature of this event has shaken our community.”

Suspect’s criminal history

Court and police records reveal a troubling past for Cobos-Martinez.

  • Florida: Arrested for auto theft.
  • Houston: Faced charges of indecency with a child and assault.
  • Immigration status: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed Cobos-Martinez should have been deported to Cuba but remained free due to limited deportation flights.

ICE officials told NBC 5 that he “should have never been free,” blaming federal policy for his release from the Bluebonnet Detention Center under an order of supervision.

Arrest and confession

Cobos-Martinez was caught shortly after the attack, still holding the machete. Police also recovered Nagamallaiah’s motel key card and cell phone in his possession.

Investigators say he later confessed to the crime during a recorded interview. An affidavit cited by NBC News states:

“Video shows the suspect then exited the motel room and produced a machete from his person and started cutting and stabbing the complainant multiple times.”
