Airbnb Owner Slaps Guest With $10,000 Bill Over a selfie: Here's Why

Viral TikToker says dream stay turned into dispute

An Airbnb guest has claimed he was hit with a $10,000 penalty after a selfie taken at one of the platform’s most famous properties triggered a commercial photography clause.

TikToker Sean Davis shared the ordeal in a video that has been viewed over 1.3 million times, describing his stay at the viral Invisible House in Joshua Tree, California, as “a complete nightmare.”

The property, a glass-wrapped mansion designed to blend into the desert, has long been a social media sensation and was even described by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky as “a piece of modern art.”

How a selfie led to a $10,000 fee

Davis said he booked the Airbnb for what he thought would be a simple photo shoot. According to him, the trouble began when a friend’s girlfriend snapped a selfie in the bathroom and posted it on Instagram, tagging a brand.

“We didn’t let them know we were taking some photos outside and got shook down for 10k over a selfie tagging a brand not even mine,” Davis wrote in the caption of his TikTok.

In a follow-up post, he stressed: “We didn’t actually shoot any brand content in the house. We shot outside, but they had an issue with a selfie.”

But Davis has warned others against booking it, saying: “Looks cool, but is a complete nightmare.”

Bigger questions about Airbnb policies

The incident highlights growing tensions between Airbnb guests and hosts over commercial content creation. With Instagram and TikTok fueling the popularity of luxury rentals, more properties are tightening their rules on photo shoots and imposing hefty fines for violations.

Airbnb has not yet commented on the dispute, but the case could spark debate on how clearly such clauses are communicated to guests before booking.
