Meta Unveils AI-Powered Smart Glasses in Latest Metaverse Push

At its annual developers conference, Meta unveiled a new lineup of AI-powered smart glasses designed to push the company’s long-term vision of blending physical and digital realities. The highlight was the Ray-Ban Display smart glasses, a premium model priced at $799 that integrates built-in displays, enabling wearers to read messages, view photos, and interact with apps as if glancing at a smartphone screen.
The new glasses are paired with sensor-equipped neural bands that detect subtle finger movements, letting users control the device without physical buttons or voice commands. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the product as a step toward building “personal superintelligence” and a key pillar of what he continues to call the metaverse.
Unlike earlier models that functioned mainly as stylish wearables with cameras and voice assistants, the Ray-Ban Display introduces:

Meta also introduced updates to its existing lineup:
Together, these products expand Meta’s ecosystem of wearables beyond social use cases into productivity and performance.
Zuckerberg has repeatedly argued that AI-infused eyewear could replace the smartphone as the next major computing platform. By shifting control from screens in our hands to natural gestures and holographic overlays, Meta hopes to redefine how people interact with information.

The strategy reflects a bigger ambition: to free Meta from reliance on mobile ecosystems controlled by Apple and Google. If smart glasses become mainstream, Meta gains a chance to own the hardware, operating system, and app store of the future—just as Apple did with the iPhone.
Despite the futuristic pitch, Meta faces significant hurdles. Its Reality Labs division, which houses metaverse and AR/VR projects, has reported steep losses. In the most recent quarter, the unit lost $4.5 billion on just $370 million in revenue, raising questions about sustainability.
Industry analysts warn that the path to profitability is far from clear. Leo Gebbie of CCS Insight noted, “There’s no realistic chance that smart glasses sales make this division profitable in the short term. This is about playing the long-term game.”

The comparison to Google Glass, launched in 2013 and later discontinued after privacy concerns and poor adoption, also looms large. Meta’s success depends on avoiding the same fate while persuading consumers that these glasses offer everyday value.
The global smart glasses market is small but growing. According to Grand View Research, it was valued at nearly $2 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $8.26 billion by 2030. That’s healthy growth, but still niche compared to the multi-trillion-dollar smartphone industry.
Meta claims its Ray-Ban line has already sold millions of units, making it the top-selling AI glasses worldwide. However, that div remains modest against the billions of smartphones in circulation.

Zuckerberg’s rebrand of Facebook to Meta in 2021 was a bold bet that immersive computing would be the next frontier. Smart glasses represent a bridge between the present and that vision: less bulky than VR headsets but more interactive than phones.
Meta frames the technology not just as convenience but as empowerment:
“AI glasses connect us to real-world superpowers as we move throughout the day,” Meta said in a statement.
The real test will be consumer adoption. While Meta’s branding partnership with Ray-Ban and Oakley parent EssilorLuxottica helps overcome fashion hurdles, mainstream users must still be convinced that the glasses are worth their price—and safe to use in public.
For now, Meta seems willing to absorb billions in losses to stake its claim in the post-smartphone era. Whether consumers follow remains the trillion-dollar question.
Meta unveiled its most advanced AI-powered smart glasses at its annual developer conference, including the $799 Ray-Ban Display with built-in screens and gesture control. While CEO Mark Zuckerberg pitches the devices as the future of computing and a gateway to the metaverse, Meta’s Reality Labs continues to post steep losses. Analysts say adoption will be slow, but Meta views the long game as breaking free from Apple and Google’s dominance in mobile ecosystems.
