Windows 10 Support Ends On October 14: What It Means For Users And Their Devices

From October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop providing updates for Windows 10. While the operating system will continue to run, it will no longer receive security patches, leaving users more vulnerable to cyberattacks. Experts warn that unpatched systems are common targets for hackers.
Microsoft has urged users to upgrade to Windows 11, describing it as “more modern, secure and efficient.” For those whose hardware does not meet Windows 11 requirements, the company is offering a $30 one-year extension of Windows 10 security updates, called the Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Users can also choose to replace older devices.
According to Consumer Reports, around 650 million people worldwide were still using Windows 10 as of August 2025. Research group PIRG estimates that up to 400 million computers may be incompatible with Windows 11, making the transition more difficult for many.
Several consumer groups have criticised Microsoft’s decision. US-based Consumer Reports called it a “blow to consumers’ pocketbooks.”
In Europe, French group End Planned Obsolescence (HOP) launched a petition demanding free updates until 2030. Germany’s consumer federation also warned that the move pressures users into buying new computers, which could harm both finances and the environment.
Without updates, systems become increasingly vulnerable. Cybersecurity expert Martin Kraemer noted that outdated systems will no longer be protected against new malware and hacking attempts. Over time, many third-party applications may also stop supporting Windows 10, reducing software compatibility.
