Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth Attack Diversity in Military, Urge Resignations

Quantico, Virginia — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a blistering critique of the military’s leadership and culture on Tuesday, telling top commanders they should resign if they do not support his agenda. The event, held at Marine Corps Base Quantico, featured remarks from both Hegseth and President Donald Trump, who echoed attacks on diversity initiatives and hinted at expanded military deployments to American cities.
In his opening speech, Hegseth accused past political leaders of weakening the armed forces by embracing diversity programs and tolerating what he described as a “woke” culture.
“Foolish and reckless political leaders set the wrong compass heading and we lost our way. We became the ‘Woke Department,’” Hegseth said. “But not anymore.”

Hegseth, a former Fox News personality appointed Defense Secretary earlier this year, defended his firings of senior officers, including the country’s top general — who is Black — and the Navy’s highest-ranking admiral, a woman. He argued that they were part of a “broken culture” and pledged sweeping changes to how the Pentagon investigates misconduct and discrimination complaints.
“If the words I’m speaking today are making your hearts sink, then you should do the honorable thing and resign,” he told the audience. “I know the overwhelming majority of you feel the opposite. These words make your hearts full.”
He also railed against the physical condition of senior officers, declaring it “completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon.” New fitness standards will be measured against male benchmarks only, he said, while reiterating a ban on beards. “The era of unprofessional appearance is over. No more beardos.”

President Trump, who joined Hegseth at the event, delivered a freewheeling speech lasting more than an hour. Standing before an auditorium of uniformed officials and a backdrop that read “Strength. Service. America.,” Trump repeated his promise to strip politics out of promotions and staffing decisions.
“Merit. Everything’s based on merit. … We’re not going to have somebody taking your place for political reasons, because they are politically correct and you’re not,” Trump said. “I am with you. I support you, and as president, I have your backs 100%.”
At one point, Trump joked that officers unhappy with his remarks could “leave the room,” adding, “Of course, there goes your rank, there goes your future.”

The president also returned to one of his most controversial policies: deploying active-duty troops and National Guard units to U.S. cities. He suggested using cities like Portland and Chicago as “training grounds” for the military, describing undocumented immigrants as part of an “invasion from within.”
“America is under invasion from within,” Trump said. “No different than a foreign enemy, but more difficult in many ways, because they don’t wear uniforms.”
Democrats quickly condemned the rhetoric and the event itself, which summoned military leaders from around the world on short notice, just days before a potential government shutdown.

Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Hegseth’s message undermined the foundational principle of a nonpartisan military. “It signals that partisan loyalty matters more than capability, judgment, or service to the Constitution,” Reed said.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker also pushed back after Trump labeled undocumented immigrants as enemies. “Anyone who talks about their fellow Americans as enemies to be ‘taken out’ is not fit to lead the nation,” Pritzker posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The Pentagon has undergone sweeping changes since Trump returned to office. Over the past eight months, the administration has fired senior officers, banned books from service academy libraries, and ordered strikes on suspected drug boats near Venezuela. Earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order renaming the Department of Defense the “Department of War,” though the measure still requires congressional approval.
The Quantico event highlighted the extent to which Trump and Hegseth aim to reshape military culture — and blurred the line between civilian politics and military professionalism. Many officers sat expressionless during the speeches, some taking notes but refraining from visible reactions.
The cost of the gathering, which brought in generals and admirals from around the world, has not yet been disclosed.
