“No More Beards, Long Hair”: Pete Hegseth’s Military Grooming Rules Spark Backlash From Sikhs

A new Pentagon directive banning most forms of facial hair has reignited debates over religious freedom in the U.S. military. Sikh, Muslim, and Jewish advocacy groups say the policy forces service members to choose between faith and duty. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defends the move as a return to “discipline and uniformity,” but critics call it discriminatory and out of step with modern military values.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s recent announcement has stirred one of the most divisive cultural debates in the military in over a decade. Speaking at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Hegseth declared an end to what he called “superficial individual expression,” adding, “If you want a beard, you can join special forces. If not, then shave.”
The Pentagon followed up with a formal memo titled “Grooming Standards for Facial Hair,” directing all branches to revert to pre-2010 standards. The policy bans beards, goatees, and long hair unless specifically authorized, with enforcement expected within 90 days. Mustaches are permitted—but only if neatly trimmed and kept within strict length limits.

In practical terms, the policy eliminates facial hair waivers that had allowed many Sikh, Muslim, and Jewish service members to maintain religious practices while serving.
The Sikh Coalition, one of the most prominent advocacy organizations for Sikhs in the U.S. military, condemned Hegseth’s remarks and the Pentagon directive, calling it “a violation of religious liberty and inclusion.”
For Sikhs, keeping unshorn hair (kesh) and wearing a turban are sacred tenets of faith. Over the past decade, advocacy from the Sikh Coalition and others helped secure exemptions that allowed hundreds of Sikh-Americans to serve while maintaining their religious identity.

“Time and again, Sikhs have proven that they can serve honorably and effectively while upholding their faith,” the Coalition said in a statement. “This decision forces them to choose between country and conscience.”
The group also accused Hegseth of using demeaning language, noting he reportedly mocked bearded servicemembers as “beardo-s” and “fat generals.”
Hegseth, a former Army National Guard officer, has long championed what he calls a “return to discipline” in the armed forces. His stance—“no more beards, long hair, superficial individual expression”—reflects a broader cultural push to reassert traditional military aesthetics and values.

But critics say that framing diversity as a threat to discipline misrepresents the modern military’s priorities. The U.S. armed forces have historically adapted grooming policies to reflect both operational needs and social progress—from integrating women to allowing religious accommodations for head coverings and facial hair.
Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), said the new directive is part of a “comprehensive, universal attack” that disproportionately impacts non-Christian, non-white, and non-male service members.
“This is not just about beards,” Weinstein told local media. “It’s about whose identities are considered acceptable in the U.S. military.”

Under the new standards, all branches must:
That means service members with existing waivers—granted for religious or medical reasons—may be required to shave or face reassignment.
For many religious minorities, that’s more than a cosmetic issue.

Advocates argue that these communities have a proven record of service and valor, from Sikh soldiers in Afghanistan to Muslim chaplains in Iraq. “Their contributions are beyond question,” said a former military chaplain who requested anonymity. “This is not about performance—it’s about prejudice disguised as policy.”
The Pentagon’s new rule could face legal challenges under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which prohibits the government from substantially burdening an individual’s exercise of religion unless it can demonstrate a compelling interest pursued through the least restrictive means.
Previous lawsuits—including Singh v. Carter (2015)—helped establish the right of Sikh service members to maintain religious grooming practices. Legal experts say similar challenges are likely if the new directive is enforced without exemptions.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other organizations are reportedly reviewing the policy for potential violations of both RFRA and the First Amendment.
The controversy underscores a deeper tension between tradition and inclusion in U.S. defense institutions. As the military struggles to meet recruitment goals, critics argue that alienating religious and minority communities could worsen the problem.
Moreover, this debate plays out amid broader culture-war rhetoric about “wokeness” in the armed forces. Hegseth, who has publicly criticized “diversity initiatives,” framed the new grooming rules as restoring “discipline and masculinity” in the ranks—a message that resonates with some but alienates others.

Experts warn that turning grooming policies into political statements risks eroding unity within the ranks. “A soldier’s beard doesn’t compromise national security,” said one defense analyst. “But division and distrust among troops just might.”
Each branch of the military has 60 days to draft implementation plans and 90 days for full enforcement. The Sikh Coalition and MRFF have called for congressional intervention and urged the Department of Defense Inspector General to review the policy’s compliance with federal law.
If history is any guide, this debate is far from over. In 2017, the Army formally revised its rules to allow Sikh soldiers to maintain their beards and turbans after years of advocacy. Reversing that progress could reignite a legal and moral battle that tests the military’s commitment to both discipline and diversity.
