Chinese Woman Develops Kidney Disease From Monthly Hair Dye To Match Pop Idol

When beauty trends cross into health risks, the consequences can be severe. A 20-year-old woman from China’s Henan province recently developed kidney disease after dyeing her hair every month to match her favorite pop idol’s changing looks. The case has reignited concerns over the health risks of frequent chemical hair dye use, particularly among young fans chasing celebrity-inspired styles.
The woman, identified only as Hua, reportedly visited hair salons nearly once a month to replicate her idol’s ever-changing hairstyles, according to the South China Morning Post. Over time, she began developing red spots on her legs, joint pain, and stomach aches.
Doctors at Zhengzhou People’s Hospital diagnosed her with kidney inflammation, a condition believed to be linked to repeated exposure to chemicals in hair dyes. The celebrity who inspired her frequent color changes was not identified.

Medical experts note that such cases, though rare, highlight how excessive cosmetic chemical use can cause more than surface-level damage, potentially affecting vital organs through prolonged exposure.
Hair dye products contain a complex mix of chemicals designed to break down natural hair pigments and deposit new color. These substances can enter the body through the scalp or skin absorption, especially when used frequently or improperly.
According to the American Cancer Society, darker permanent dyes often contain higher concentrations of these chemicals, some of which have shown carcinogenic effects in animal studies. While human evidence remains mixed, the cumulative impact of repeated exposure is still a concern.

The risk from hair dye is not just cosmetic. Overuse can trigger a range of short-term and long-term health problems.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) warns that frequent use of chemical hair products may also contribute to respiratory irritation and other systemic health effects. Pregnant women, in particular, are advised to minimize dye exposure during the first trimester.
Dermatologists generally recommend spacing out hair dye sessions to allow the scalp and hair to recover.
A good rule of thumb:

In the age of social media, fans often emulate celebrities’ hairstyles, makeup, and fashion choices without realizing the health or cost implications. K-pop stars like EXO’s Sehun and Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon have popularized vibrant, multi-colored hair, fueling global trends in frequent coloring. But these stars have professional stylists, dermatologists, and access to advanced hair treatments that ordinary fans may not.
Experts warn that what works under studio lights may not be sustainable or safe for everyday individuals. Repeated exposure to strong chemical products without professional aftercare can lead to cumulative health effects over time.
Most regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), permit hair dye ingredients under strict labeling and safety conditions. However, not all long-term effects are fully understood.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies occupational exposure to hair dyes as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” mainly concerning salon professionals. For consumers, the evidence remains “inadequate,” but experts still advise moderation and safety precautions.
Ultimately, while occasional hair coloring is unlikely to cause harm, overuse, particularly monthly or more frequently, increases the potential for chemical buildup and systemic effects.
Hua’s case highlights a growing concern: the intersection of beauty, social influence, and health risks. In a world where image trends change rapidly, moderation and awareness are essential.
Hair dye can be safely enjoyed, but it should be treated as a chemical product, not a harmless accessory. Understanding what goes into your hair and how often you expose yourself to it may be just as important as choosing the right color.
