Navy veteran, 83, with dementia found dead in Florida care home freezer

An 83-year-old Navy veteran suffering from dementia was found dead inside a walk-in freezer at a Florida assisted living facility — a discovery that has shocked his family and raised troubling questions about safety standards in elder care homes.

Who was William Eugene “Gene” Ray?

William Eugene Ray, known affectionately as “Gene,” was a U.S. Navy veteran who served his country for 36 years, joining the service at age 17. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a land surveyor and later joined the Florida Department of Transportation.

Ray, a father of two, had been living at Waverly Assisted Living and Memory Care in Trinity, Florida, since May 2025 as his dementia progressed. His daughter, Kristen Spencer, had installed a Ring camera in his room to help monitor him remotely.

“He was a kind, disciplined man who loved structure, the kind of person who always kept his word,” Spencer told Fox 13. “You put your loved one in there with trust.”

How was he found inside a freezer?

On the night of September 26, Spencer checked the live feed from her father’s camera and noticed his room light was on, but he was nowhere to be seen. Reviewing earlier footage, she saw her father had walked out of his room around 12:30 a.m. and never returned.

Alarmed, Spencer contacted her mother, who then called the facility to report him missing. Hours later, staff members found Ray’s body inside a walk-in freezer at the care home.

“The next words out of her mouth were, ‘He’s in the freezer,’” Spencer recalled. “I said, ‘What do you mean he’s in the freezer?’”

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, but said no signs of foul play were found in the initial inquiry. An autopsy is pending.

Family demands accountability

While authorities have not released further details about how Ray entered the freezer or how long he was inside, the family is demanding answers about staff supervision, security protocols, and facility maintenance.

“If we had not called the facility, when would they have found him?” Spencer asked.

She added, “When you have vulnerable people in a place, you have to secure these areas.”

Family members said Ray’s stay had been largely uneventful until recent weeks, when small lapses, such as misplaced medication or delayed staff responses, began raising concerns about inconsistent care.

What the facility said

In a statement, Waverly Assisted Living and Memory Care described the incident as “heartbreaking” and defended its staff, asking the public not to spread speculation online.

“We have never experienced an incident of this nature in our many years of operating in the assisted living space,” the statement read. “Our community is deeply saddened by this loss. We are proud of our staff’s immediate response and grateful for their continued compassion and professionalism.”

The facility also urged people to stop posting “unmoderated, anonymous, non-factual reviews” on social media while the investigation continues.

Broader questions about elder care safety

The case has renewed scrutiny over safety and supervision lapses in senior care facilities, particularly those that serve residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Florida, home to one of the nation’s largest elderly populations, has seen a sharp rise in safety violations at assisted living centers over the past five years, according to state health data. Many involve residents wandering unsupervised or being found in unsafe areas.

Experts say facilities are legally required to ensure restricted access to hazardous areas, including kitchens and walk-in freezers, under state and federal elder care regulations.

“When someone with dementia is able to enter an unsecured freezer, that’s a systems failure, not just a human error,” said Dr. Lisa Calderon, a geriatric care expert at the University of South Florida. “These facilities must be designed for safety first, especially at night.”

What happens next?

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has not indicated whether criminal charges are possible. However, state regulators are expected to review the incident to determine whether the facility violated care or safety protocols.

Meanwhile, Spencer says her family will continue pressing for answers and reform.

“My father served his country for decades,” she said. “He deserved dignity and safety. No family should ever get a phone call like that.”

TL;DR

  • William Eugene “Gene” Ray, 83, a Navy veteran with dementia, was found dead inside a walk-in freezer at his Florida assisted living home.
  • His daughter discovered he was missing through a Ring camera and alerted the facility.
  • Authorities found no immediate signs of foul play, but investigations continue.
  • The family is demanding accountability for security failures and oversight lapses.
  • The incident highlights broader issues in elder care safety across Florida.
