High Levels of Lead Found in Protein Powders & Shakes In US
October 15, 2025

A new investigation by Consumer Reports (CR) has raised serious concerns about the safety of popular protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes. Tests on 23 leading brands found that more than two-thirds contained more lead in a single serving than what is considered safe for daily consumption.
In some cases, the contamination was shockingly high, up to 10 times the safe daily limit for lead exposure, according to CR’s food safety experts.
Lead, a toxic heavy metal, can accumulate in the body over time and cause severe health problems, especially for children, pregnant women, and regular supplement users.

Consumer Reports published a detailed breakdown of lead concentrations, measured in micrograms per serving. The worst offenders included:
For context, Consumer Reports’ “level of concern” for lead is 0.5 micrograms per day, meaning that about 70% of the tested products exceeded 120% of this threshold.
The report revealed a striking pattern: plant-based protein products, particularly those derived from peas, rice, or hemp, contained significantly higher lead levels than those made from whey or beef protein.

On average:
Experts attribute this to the way plants absorb heavy metals from soil, especially in industrial agricultural regions or contaminated farmlands. Crops like rice and peas are particularly susceptible to drawing up lead and cadmium from the ground.
According to Tunde Akinleye, the Consumer Reports food safety researcher who led the testing, lead contamination levels have risen over the past 15 years, and fewer products now have undetectable levels of the metal.

While the report stops short of urging consumers to throw away all protein powders, Akinleye cautioned that daily use could carry long-term risks:
“There’s more to lose than you’re gaining. We advise against daily use for most protein powders, since many have high levels of heavy metals and none are necessary to hit your protein goals.”
Consumer Reports added that occasional use is unlikely to cause harm, but routine or high-dose consumption may lead to chronic exposure.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that no amount of lead exposure is considered completely safe. Prolonged intake — even in microgram quantities- can cause:
Because protein powders are often consumed daily and marketed as “healthy supplements,” they pose a hidden risk of cumulative toxicity that may go unnoticed for years.
Protein supplements have become a $25 billion global industry, used not only by athletes but also by people seeking weight management or nutritional balance. However, as Akinleye emphasized, most people can meet their protein needs through regular food sources such as eggs, legumes, dairy, and lean meats — without the risk of ingesting heavy metals.

The findings raise important questions about how dietary supplements are regulated in the U.S. Unlike prescription drugs, protein powders fall under looser FDA oversight, meaning companies are largely responsible for ensuring their own safety and quality control.
Consumer advocacy groups are now calling for mandatory heavy metal testing and clear labeling of contamination levels on supplement packaging.
Experts recommend the following steps for those who regularly use protein powders or shakes:

While not every protein powder is dangerous, many contain lead and other heavy metals at levels that raise health concerns. The Consumer Reports investigation serves as a reminder that “natural,” “plant-based,” or “organic” labels don’t always mean safe.
Until stronger regulations are in place, consumers should exercise caution — use protein supplements sparingly, diversify sources, and stay informed about independent lab testing.
A new Consumer Reports study found that over two-thirds of 23 popular protein powders and shakes contain unsafe levels of lead, with some exceeding 10 times the daily safe limit. Plant-based products had the highest contamination, while dairy-based proteins had the lowest. Experts advise limiting protein powder intake and relying more on natural food sources to avoid chronic heavy metal exposure.
